Odometer Still doesn't work after new gears

1983 533i, I replaced the gears in my odometer. The odometer now works intermitently and very slowly, my 20mile commuter only registered 5 miles, then stopped working again. Physically everything looks fine, and spins fine manually. I'm assuming this is an electrical problem but I can't trace it. The Speedo works fine, and doesn't modulate when I honk the horn (a symptom of a bad board I learned from another forum). Any Ideas?

This exact thing happened to me also so I went back to the instructions and missed one step.....vacuuming out the old broken pieces. All is OK now.

Thanks! One more thing, do these steering wheels adjust? If I could lower the wheel getting the gauge cluster out would be a lot easier. There is a lever on the bottom side of the steering column but it doesn't seem to do anything.

I really don't know myself as I haven't been using mine very much latetly, but try mye28.com forum and you should be able to find your answer there.
Good luck.

They adjust, but it's probably stuck from years of not being used. You can loosen the lever and try to work the steering column free. Try suirting some penetrating spray in there and consider loosening some of the mounting bolts.
Someone once had the same problem and found that there is one bolt in particular that when loosened, relieved much of the tension on the telescopic segments.

The steering wheel telescopes in/out, not up/down. As mentioned, it might be stiff if it hasn't been moved in a while.
