Self-serving positive reviews from owners who want to justify their purchase would be a common theme, but having failed to see even one disappointed owner, I'm leaning towards the upgrade. I have yet to see this post, "I bought the PE and am severely disappointed . My car is still an underwhelming boat-- it's just a load boat now."

Well, if ya pays $1200, 'confidence is high' you gonna like it.

If ya don't....well, then.

A question for the experts and experienced: Is the PI absolutely essential? When I read the BMW propaganda, it indicates that the PE/PI combination will "boost the performance" of the 328i (MT) nearly into the realm of a 330i. Is the difference between the 328i and the 330i that noticeable?

Bottom line, if one is already throwing $1300 in the direction of a more pleasant exhaust note, is the additional $1K (for the PI) mandatory for full enjoyment or just icing on the cake?
Enjoy the PE sound & forget the intake there is not much you can do for the 328 itself. Not a knock on the 328 just the way it is. I enjoy tinkering with cars if there is a meaningful result.

I have a 330Ci ZHP 6MT that is as stock today, except for bigger tires, as the day I bought it in 2004. Any performance money & effort I would have put into it would have been for naught. Thing to realize is the 3.0 N/A is already highly developed by BMW & does not have much left to give.

Kevin,

Thanks much for the frank, concise and honest assessment. You just made the follow through much easier. Much appreciated.

Put a PE on my '11 328 coupe about a year ago, and would not have a 328 w/o one. It just makes the car sound so much better, like a BMW should sound, and also so much more fun. Looked into the PI but for me, it just wasn't needed. The only drawback for me has been slightly lower MPG, but that's from change in driving style, one just can't help driving slightly different with that sound. If I had a 335 don't think I'd do it, but a 328...really needed. The ONLY regret was that I should have done it sooner.

@NK,

I've read that the combination of the PE and PI results in *much* more noise than the PE alone.

@others -- I suppose I've satisfied myself that the noise alone is worth the expenditure. Anything else that may be gained-- placebo, minimal or otherwise, is gravy.

To the dealership!

Excellent decision. I paid $800 dollars for BMW's PPK I that adds about 20 hp and 15 llbft to N55 engine, which is way more than you could add to N52 with PE. I didn't buy it for hp gain (which I can't feel anyway), but for the sound. Since then, I drive with windows open if it is between 40 and 90 degrees outside.

Enjoy your new sound.

For people who can't cut & weld this might be an alternative.

I spent much less on my RennArt catback exhaust and could not have been more happy with results. So I would ask you to find a cheaper route or find one that is used and being sold on here or E90 post for a little less.

FYI: $500 for JB4

Power you can definitely feel, and better exhaust note. Many options and extensive user controls. Big bubbles, no troubles.

What matters is that you have a massive eargasm every time you hit the throttle. The PE will give you what you need; you will be satisfied.

Enough questions. Enough small talk. Mount that smooth steel tubing and get it on.
Very, very well said, Db750

As an update, I've made my appointment for Tuesday, March 19. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

My SA was excited-- he mentioned how much he enjoys adding the exhaust to cars. It was his experience that there was a fuel economy gain; and even with the appropriate grain of salt SA propaganda requires, that makes me happy.

While doing some work on my car, I had the left hand muffler removed. I took the opportunity to start the car up to hear what it sounded like.

Between the long exhaust, the cats, and the muffling done by the turbos, the car sounded pretty nice. So now I'm thinking about installing some electric exhaust cutouts, so I can keep things sounding stock, but flip a switch and open the exhaust up.

I don't want to make noise all the time, because I'm quite happy with the size of my penis already. The cutouts seems like an ideal solution.

Happy to hear that your anatomy is sufficient. That being said a number of guys who have tried cutouts had a difficult time trying to find space for them & most if not all gave up. Typically they pulled the middle cats.

Do they still even make Cherry Bombs or other "glass pack" mufflers?

I had a pair of Cherry Bomb header mufflers bolted directly to the header collectors of my 428 Super Cobra Jet Mustang Mach I. They just ended under the car, no pipes to the back.

Awesome basso profondo sound under anything but full acceleration and deafening at full throttle. It was everything a testosterone addled 17 year old could want.

I'm not sure I'd want my BMW sports sedan to be quite so audacious.

Yes - First ones I ever heard were on a lead sled '49 Merc 2 door in '53 or so, not much has changed. Was in the 6th or 7th grade & it started my car thing disease.
