Since you keep losing coolant, you need to figure out where the leak originates. Could be any number of parts - usual culprits are expansion tank, water pump and/or radiator.

How old is your car, what model is it, how many miles does it have and what have you replaced (or not done) cooling system wise? If you give out some details, lots of smart folks (not me) on this board can help you.

Auto or man trans?
Fan working?
Overheating when rolling or stopped?
How low was fluid? How much did it take?
Any trace of coolant in the oil?
Clues Watson, we need clues.

Pull the oil dipstick - if the oil looks milky, you blew a headgasket. If not, thank your lucky stars and get busy doing some maintenance. Given your miles and problems, you need to haul the car to a good garage so they can go over your car thoroughly to see what needs to be done. At any rate, there are many possible overheating causes and you need to get it figured out before you do real damage.

The black stuff could be from your cooling fan clutch, an indication that it's failing. You need to also determine if any cooling system components are leaking. Sometimes the system only leaks at operating temp and pressure.

Correct, at this mileage, you should replace the t-stat, water pump, expansion tank, and hoses. One of these is probably your problem. The items that are still working are on borrowed time.
