E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135. |

Power Kit installed
Had BMW's power kit installed last week. My SA talked me into it and I figured for the price ($900 installed w/BMW CCA parts discount) it couldn't hurt to give it a shot. Of course it's not as intense as some of the other tuning options, but it's something different. I opted for the Level 1, however I noticed the car runs about 15-20 degrees warmer now so may consider the upgraded cooling option now. I seriously doubted that you could tell the difference, but you really can. Turbo lag is minimized, definitely more punchy than before, and exhaust has a nice little burble to it. The most noticeable difference is the 50-90mph performance... This thing screams when you punch it while cruising around 55mph and surges past 100 in no time. Definitely nice since 6-cylinders are not known for their upper-end power capabilities.

Well, many inline 6-cylinder BMW engines are known for their upper-end power capabilities. The S54, for example makes maximum power at 7900RPM and has a specific power output of over 100 bhp per litre, one of the best outputs for any naturally aspirated road car engine.

Yes I agree, should've been more clear- I meant high-speed capabilities. I never had a 6 cylinder that really impressed me when you punched it while going 120mph. This thing (before and after the power kit) is so impressive!

The S54 in my Z4M will also accelerate hard from 200km/h (125mph) and beyond, always pulling hard when shifting from 4th to 5th on the track at 215km/h (135mph). There are many 6-cylinder BMWs that will accelerate well from 120mph to the (usual) electronic cutoff at 155mph.

I am a huge believer in the N54. I had a Dinan stage 2 with exhaust and it screamed. Now it's in the shop getting new go fast parts. Intercooler and CAI with stage 3. Should be around 398 Hp with 438 torque. Can't wait to fool into that.
