2012 X3 2.8i Transmission Lurch

My mother has a 2012 X3 2.8i. When I was driving it yesterday, I noticed (during very light acceleration) what felt like a very pronounced stall and then bang from what I assume is the transmission. It felt almost as if the transmission slipped either into neutral or (more likely) a much higher gear, then slammed back down into the correct gear. I was going somewhere around 30-40mph at the time. After it happened, my mother told me that she had experienced something similar a couple of weeks ago but hadn't mentioned it since she didn't really know how to describe it.

I've gone over the forums but haven't noticed anyone with this particular issue. Does anyone have any idea what's going on and what she could say to the dealer to get it resolved? We weren't able to reproduce the problem.

Thanks, though I'm not sure if that's her issue. The jerk I experienced felt like someone ran into the back of me; is the common problem with the transmission really that bad?

In any case, the car is 1.5 years old, so I wouldn't think that it's still in the process of learning her driving style.

Adam, read xDriven's post about transmission failure in his 35 -- same "lurch" like some one rear ended you. Might want to PM and compare notes.

I own a 2013 28i and have noticed, from time to time, when I am backing up I experience something similar to what AdamsGuitar talks about. I think, "uh-oh, did I just hit something?", the answer? Nope, didn't hit a thing just a lurch. It doesn't happen all the time so I am thinking the dealer can't easily diagnose an intermitent problem. I also think maybe it's the way I am driving that causes this to happen only once in awhile.
