2010 550i should trans start in first or second

I thought the 2010 550 transmission is supposed to start out in second gear, unless in sport mode. Mine always starts in first whether in drive or sport. Is there something I can do to make it start in second, besides shifting manually?

I think you need to drive like a very old person. If you drive aggressively the trans will adapt to be more aggressive meaning you're ready to launch quickly usually. If you drive moderately it should start out in second and be a tad more efficient. I think you can get it reset and start over.

^^yes, as boramkiv stated, try resetting the tranny adaption values by turning the car on to the accessory mode (power up electrionics but don't start car) and press and hold the gas pedal to the floor for 30 seconds.

Thanks for the suggestions. My name is Gramps, but I don't drive like one. I drove an E39 540i fpr many years and it always started off in second, unless I put it in sport, so I expected the 550 to do the same thing. Starting in first is a pain in heavy start and stop traffic because it wants to take off just as I have to stop. It has a very quick throttle. I did the transmission reset but didn't notice much if any change. Anybody with a 550..What does yours do? thanks. Long; sorry.

Gramps how do you know it is actually starting in first? I didn't think that information was displayed anywhere while in auto mode.

My 550 definitely starts in 2nd...I think a way to test it is to gently start off from a stop and get rolling to about 15 mph and then floor it. If it downshifts, it started off in 2nd. If not, there i must be some programming issues with the tranny?

For one thing, I can count the shifts as thay occur. When I manually put the trans in M2 it takes off smoothly and doesn't shift right away. When I put it in Auto, it shifts before it has gone twenty feet. Take off in M2 and it is fast. Take off in Auto (not in SPORT) and it is a monster, and than shifts to second. The only reason I don't like it is because I have to be real easy on the throttle taking off, or it leaves like I am in a race. My wife always gives me that look.
