Summer rebuild project

Hello fellow BMW owners! So I'm looking for a fun engine rebuild project to do this summer, hopefully an M20 so I can just swap out my old one with ease. I actually own an E34 but they're mostly concerned with their M50s, pshhh. Right now I'm trying to work out what the project is going to run me. The plan is to take an M20B27 "e" and rebuild the bottom end, then top it off (pun intended) with an M20B25 "i" head with a 272 cam.

So here's the list so far, let me know what I should add or remove something.

-Camshaft $280 (including eccentrics)
-Piston rings $122
-Upper gaskets $91
-Lower gaskets $53
-Head bolts $18
-Main bearings $92
-Rod bearings $44
-Rod bolts $72
-Main bearing bolts $72

That comes up to a total of $1039, not including machine work like crank polishing or boring if necessary.

are you going to shave the head or deck to help increase compression?

if it were me and i was doin the build, i would also rebuild the head

unfortunately I'm no longer sure if I will be able to do this project, as acquiring said engine is proving more difficult than expected. I found an M20B27 for $195 at Euro Depot, the problem is the number they have online doesn't work and they haven't responded to my multiple emails. I live in Concord NH, where Euro Depot USED to be, now it is apparently online only, so I'd assume they would be quick to email back. After reading a few recent reviews it seems Euro Depot has taken a turn for the worst, but I really wanted that engine so I persisted. It seems as though they're no longer in business, but they're website is still up which means someone is paying for it. Long story short I'm currently unable to find an affordable M20B27 engine anywhere, so this project might be a no go. If anyone in New Hampshire, or even New England for that matter has one of these engines I would be very happy to take it off your hands. Also if anyone could confirm the status of Euro Depot that would be appreciated too. Please contact me if you have an M20B27 or know where I can get one without it being like $700, thank you!

It's back on! After tediously searching eBay, Craigslist, and Google I finally found another engine for a great price. $150 for the block, pistons, and rods. I should be picking it up either this weekend or next. I'll be sure to update this thread throughout the project.

It's been a while since my last post and a lot has happened. I picked up a '88 325 donor car for $560, including shipping. Lucky for me the intake was already completely disassembled so I dropped the exhaust and ripped off all the pulleys. I don't have a hoist, so I tried to borrow one from a friend of mine. Delay after delay I got tired of this car in my driveway staring at me, so I made the executive decision to drop it, rather than lift. Dropping the subframe is pretty easily actually, 17 bolts and she fell out. And fall it did, a bit less smoothly than I anticipated. That was the easy part, getting the subframe out from under the car is a whole other story. After about an hour of frustration I finally was able to get the car high enough to clear the assembly. It rolled right out, looking beautiful as ever. Can't wait to tear it apart and get into this build!
