2005 x5 wont turn over

MY CAR IS A 2004 - NOT 2005, NOT SURE IT MATTERS EITHER WAY WITH THIS ISSUE

Hopped in to head to work, turned over my key and nothing -

i have lights and power, hear a hum in a small area near the dip stick when key is on. This has happened a couple times recently, but today it will not do a thing.

When i had it in for a recent oil change my mechanic mentioned its running lean on fuel, said it could be the maf sensor needs cleaning or needs a new fuel filter.

Not sure if this is something related or unrelated.

If it is orig battery, it is toast, and a good place to start...even if it has been replaced along the way, depending on when/time, it still may be toast. The 'lights' and 'hum' may still be present even with a batt nearly dead. Need more info on your battery situ.

The MAF or fuel filter would not be my first pick to clean or replace with lack of 'turn over' on key start. A 'lean' condition can be the result of many things; your mechanic should pull specific codes rather than guessing on a fix or new parting you to a pulp...

x5 Battery

I probably need to replace battery anyway, can I get away with an aftermarket or is there a specific brand I should stick with?

Will try that route, thanks for the input!

SO... added more gas thinking maybe its a fuel issue - gas light had just come on about two miles prior to stop.
It started right up, Does this mean fuel pump may be going out? or needs a fuel filter? Gas cap was tight .

Was the X parked on an incline with the front facing down? You could have run out of gas in the sump that the fuel pump is located in.
