Can't believe this is still happening to people....

I'm not wussy but.....
After having awful tire issues on my 2011 528i (which was totaled) when I purchased my 2012 535ix I made sure to get 18's. True, I gave up some handling and style but with the roads in my area it was a good decision-no tire issues yet. LS2's
However, when they wear out I'm switching to non-rft's and getting a spare and jack kit.

Non run flats and a spare tire kit is the way to go

I'm also on 18" for the same reasons; plus - interestingly (and hopefully) - RFTs are getting better and better with each new generation; just visited the BMW Poland online wheel configurator for the F10, and they promote the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT DSST ROF RSC. My Contis are rated 73dB - the Dunlops are just 65dB as far as noise is concerned!

Anyone actually uses these Dunlops in the 18" size?

The Dunlops suck big time.

On my X6, 20" Dunlop's were noisey as hell at 10k miles.

On my F10, 19" Dunlops were noisey at 10k miles, really noisey at 15k, could not bear it any longer and had to be replaced.

Don't judge a tire when it is new, judge it when the tread is a 1/3 worn down and you have to piss money away because they are noisey and suck big time.

Moral of the story. If you pay $2k for a set of run flat tires , and they are designed to last
30k miles, and you have to replace them at 15k due to noise, well guess what, that becomes a $4k set of tires.

My advice, stick with non run flat Michelins and a spare. It is the only tire mentioned on this forum where people are not incessantly complaining.

Thanks for the opinion; what you are saying is the common knowledge - but have you actually made 10k miles on this exact Dunlop models?

Yes they are OEM on several BMW models.

They are also the most expensive tires on the market. Which really surprised me that the long term performance was sub par. I thought my first set was an anomouly. But after three sets, enough was enough.

Thanks Chuck, this is important info for me. That said, I somehow can't imagine the noise increase from 65dB to more than my new Contis' 73dB - even after more than 10k miles...

I think the tires have a habit of becoming out of round or developing flat spots which result in a noise in the 20-40MPH range that sounds like "woo, woo, woo"

I am really anal when it comes to tire noise. My friends think I am psycho when I ride in their car and tell them they need new tires. They can't hear what bad tires sound like. And then they replace them and they feel like they are driving a new car.

Same issue on my VW Gti, which cam with Dunlops, and they were not even run flats, switched to Conti's and problem went away and the tires stayed quiet throughout most of their life.

Maybe I am just an odd ball, but after several tries with Dunlops, regardless of spec or price, I would avoid them. More expensive does not always translate to better.

Another piece of information.
My 2008 528i had non-rft Michelin Pilots. The car had less road noise and the handling was much better than my 2012 535ix.Also, the 2008 was non-sport and it would drive circles around the RFT's I now have.

Same for my wife's 2008 528i w/sport package...switched to Continental DWS non RFT and the car runs figure 8 around my F10. But, I get even when I punch the gas on my F10 going down a straight away

wow...after reading all these stories about GY RFT, I am glad my new 550i came with Bridgestones...

I used 245/45/18 OEM Continental ContiProContact all season tires. I chose these because they are OEM tires on the non-sport versions of the F10 X-drive in the USA and they have the same rolling circumference as the 19" LS2s that came with my car. I believe that sport X-drives in some European countries are delivered with these tires with the 19" being an extra cost option although I am not positive about this. All in all this seemed like the most compatible tire for the car.

You have to buy new wheels to accommodate the 18" tires, but BMW was willing to pay for the wheels and tires because I was one-day away from filing a lemon law case and supplying the wheels/tires was a better alternative for them. They were essentially uninterested in my problems until I notified them of the filing as required by Connecticut law and the BMW warranty.

Use of 245/45/19 tires would be acceptable and less expensive since you don’t have to buy wheels. The odometer and speedometer would be in error by 3.5% because these tires have a larger rolling circumference than the OEM tires. Some say that this compensates for the errors that are built into the car.

Only partially correct - I did get ContiSportContact summer 18" tires with my 528i xDrive.

I am trying to find the least noisy runflats (I'm reluctant to use the words quiet and run flat in the same sentence) to replace my two OEM rear tires on my 2011 F10 550 Msport. Got a little over 22K out of them, while 2 fronts still have 7/10s tread left. Some people recommend the Michelin Pilot Sport. What's everyone's opinion on this?

The older michelin pilot sports didn't last too long on my E90 M3. I ended up replacing them at about 18k miles. I'm not sure how much better the new ones fare.

Thanks. I guess there is not too much experience out there with owners presently looking for the "least noisy" RFs replacement rear tires for a 2011 F10 550 M sport.

I had Bridgestones on my 2011 - They made a racket -just awful. No bubbles but I did have two failures from internal belt failures and another tire that could not be balanced.
My 2012 535 has Goodyear Ls2's-much quieter than the Bridgestones

Also, My son just bought a set of Continental's for his 2009 328. They are much quieter than the Continental's he replaced-So maybe the technology has improved

Guys, I just got my 6th 19" Runflat replaced! I've got the dealer dealing with BMW HQ about this. The PR person at the dealer said there is another guy that had 13 RFT replacements thus far and agreed to go to 18" RFTs. Handling and looks are comprised, which I don't want to (especially since I'm only 50% of replacement that the other guy went through ). In any case, here is my question - I've seen lots of threads here on the 19" and also some issues with the 18" RFTs. But, have not seen any on the 20" RFT. I asked the dealer to ask BMW HQ about replacing my 19" with 20". I know what you're thinking - it's a lower tire so I should get more damage, but on the other hand, less sidewall, more strength?

Any of you guys with 20", like the M5 that have had bubble issues? Please chime in!

However - without a stiff, sport suspension - I'm fine with just 18" wheels, so am not going to try

Just give in and get the 18's.

My michelin oem tires are about out of tread and one on the front just developed a bubble. But they've got 31,500 miles. I think that's actually pretty good.

new to this place. i need advise if i should change to conventional tires, got my BMW 7 about a year ago and done 26000km, they are balding.
