Powertrain (oil pump) whine update

My '10 750i now has about 6100 miles. Maybe it is my imagination, but the whine that some of us are experiencing is getting louder. Also, when it is warm (75F+) my driver door makes a loud creak/groan when opening (my SA knows of this issue, as they tried fixing it around 3000 miles with some white lithium grease...didn't help)...so I decided to just stop my local dealer this afternoon.

My SA tried hearing the whine in the service bay (car in N, revving the engine)...but it was too loud in the general area to hear). I told him to drive my car around the block. He did, and when he came back, he said: NOT normal, and does not sound good. He said it sounded like a whining, old electric golf cart, when accelerating between 0-40mph.

He grabbed a mechanic, and they drove it around the block...and the mechanic said it did not sound right, and a twin turbo V8 should sound "throatier" and more robust. The mechanic said he did not like the whining sound!

They got the shop foreman...and he said there is NO problem with this car. It is just the twin turbo system. I told him that I bought my car her NEW (no miles on the odo) & this whining started around 3000 miles and is getting worse. If it was the twin turbo system, it would have done it when new (and on my test drive I would not have liked the sound, and would not have bought the car!). He insisted the whine was normal, and said 3 other new 7 Series owners brought their car in this week, for what they too thought was a problem! I went round and round with him, and he said: Until BMW tells us different, the whine is the twin turbo system! Both the SA and myself were very annoyed!!

And my driver door needs a new arm (open/closing mechanism). Has to be ordered & then installed. I told them I will just wait for a scheduled service...since the door is not really broken, I just don't like the creak/groan it makes in warm weather. It will be getting cooler soon, so won't bug me as much!

I think the problem with this powertrain (oil pump) whine is going to be an uphill battle for a lot of us. I do not think BMW or dealers want to deal with this. Luckily, my car seems to be running beautifully and everything else is great!! I just hate accelerating....the whine is so awful!!

Took my car back to the dealer today. This morning after dropping my son off at school, my Navi screen froze with the BMW logo. It was stuck for a few minutes, and when it came back to life...I could not change any radio or satellite settings. I turned off the car, let it "re-set" itself, and started her back up! Made it worse All my presets were deleted....everything! So, I dropped it off this afternoon for the Entertainment/Navi screen issue, and told them that this whine is also NOT acceptable. Even drove another 2010 on the lot....NO whine present, so they cannot tell me it is the twin turbo system (although, sadly they did try and keep telling me the turbos are to blame)! Deep down in my gut, I know I am going to get a call, and they are going to say the whine is normal, or "cannot duplicate" (even though yesterday the SA and a mechanic heard it, and said it was not normal). Ahhhhh, the many joys of driving a German car. Still, the alternative is Lexus...and I tried that 2x...MY GOD, boring (but totally 100% problem free, both times

no whine from my 09

I just went out and tried to listen, with the radio off and fans turned to low, I can barely detect a whine during acceleration, but I have to really be listening for it

Whine started yesterday

My car started a very noticeable whining noise going uphill at a speed of 30 mph. Its always had a low grade whine when idling but this noise was loud. I heard the noise even with the radio on.

Based on what I've read so far not sure if going to the dealer is going to give a resolution. Will see how things develop.

Yep... I got the same sound... to me it sounds like a old car where the speakers were not grounded and you got a win through the sound system from the alternator... is that what you guys are hearing? If so I have the same thing... our X5 does not do it and it is a twin turbo system... and neither does the 3 series... which I think is a twin turbo as well...

It's affecting the V-8 twin turbo, not the I-6 twin turbo engine. Yep, sounds like your got the BMW gift! Good Luck!!

I read and watched this thread from OP. I noticed an occasional, non consistant whine sound as described during first 10k miles.
Nothing, no sound post 10k miles. Asked my service advisor about the sound prior to the annual service and nothing was discovered or code pop up.
Good to hear the issue is resolved by some service advisors, a benefit to the owners.

i just picked it up back from the dealer, the thing that sucks is suddenly the noise disappeared, they probably greased it when they did the oil change.

I have had the problem now for awhile. It is getting worse, too. It used to just have the whine in sport mode, now it's all the time. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow. Mine is not only loud, but all of the time, adding to the annoyance.

Thank you for sharing.

I just purchased a 2010 750LI and have noticed the issue described. My dealer states its a normal noise and it occurs in all 750LI's.....does anyone have the actual service bulletin number for the repair?

Anything I can give to the dealer to help get this annoying noise corrected would be appreciated.

Took my car in for this same noise today.....asked my service adviser to get the shop foreman and he came right down to the service floor. He immediately recognized the noise and said it was the Oil Pump. I left the vehicle with them to perform the repairs. I'll let you guys know the turn around time when I get it back.
