Roof rails on 2014 35i

Hi does anyone know if this option is for flush or raised rails? I think it's for flush rails but am not sure.

Option 3AT gets you Roof rails in Aluminum Satin. They are a low profile, solid roof rail with no openings. Go to this page and hover your mouse over the "roof rails in Aluminum satin" option and a pop-up will show you a picture.

Get the High Gloss Black roof rails, if you must have them. The Satin Aluminum are just hideous, IMHO. In fact, the '14 X3 I ordered a few weeks ago, which was supposed to come with the High Gloss Black rails, arrived at the dealership yesterday with the Satin Aluminum rails and they look so terrible, I told my CA they will have to reorder my vehicle. He is offering to have them swapped for the black rails, but I don't want major roof surgery on my brand new vehicle. Short of selling me this vehicle at $1k under invoice, they will be stuck with this X3 and will have to order me a new one. I can wait another 3 weeks.

I have the space gray metallic body color so the satin aluminum rails are okay for me. All black rails would not look good to me. But I have on order a roof rack consisting of black Thule podium feet and black powder-coated bars. Should look nice with the black panels on the bottom.

I disagree - regarding the satin rails I have them and like them on my Carbon Black M Sport. The satin rails serve to highlight and visually lengthen the X3's artfully rakish roof line. Moreover, they provide a nice counter balance to the polished 19 inched wheels and the large kidney grille with aluminum trim. I have a friend who has a similar setup and he is also enthusiastic about the look.

I love how some people think there's a right or wrong for personal taste...

Hence my writing "IMHO". Perhaps you don't know that means "in my humble opinion"?

In my humble opinion, the Satin Aluminum rails look hideous against the black. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and tastes vary. I was simply stating my opinion.

I have the satin aluminum roof rails on our black 2014 X3. As an Architect I find them to be exceedingly hideous. I hate them. I am going to have them replaced.

I think it really depends on what color your kidney grilles are.
If they are black, black roof rails are better match. Vice versa.

I think color has a lot to do with this choice. If you have blue, I think the satin looks polished. If its black then the satin stands out. I wonder what it would look like with carbon black?

Ha Ha! Explains a lot....

As an Art Director, I would hold you responsible for your lack of vision and note the change order in your folder. I would also note in your folder, your courage to step forward and admit your mistake.

As an Artist, I can make a credible argument for either look - in the end, this is really a matter of personal taste. Words like hideous do not advance an argument. Personally, I agree, in the case of a black car with black trim and black interior - I would choose black rails.

A good point - I noted the same on another thread.

These pics aren't ours, but I found these pictures online of bronze metallic with the satin rails.

This is what we ordered, 609 Rims, Xline, and Satin Rails.

See, the Satin rails look good to me on that Sparkling Bronze X3. I think the shiny window trim, as opposed to the Shadowline (black) trim on the M Sports, also help to make the Satin rails blend in better. It looks worlds better than the Satin rails on the BSM M Sport that arrived for me on Saturday.

I just don't like the look of bright, shiny metal on my vehicles. Again, that is my personal taste.

I think the satin rails and silver grill both look good on the space gray metallic, and ok on the bronze metallic. As for on white, they do nothing for me.
