Not sure why your asking this...it may go a long way in you getting an answer that would be tailored to what you're trying to do..."fit" & "work" may be something totally different...again, depending on what you're trying to do and why.

Plus we have no clue as to how much you already know & understand about the 3 different engines that were used in the 95-99 e38 740 that were imported to the USA:
  • M60 V8 - 1995 (mechanical throttle)
  • M62 V8 - 1996-1998 (mechanical throttle + some VALVETRONIC technology)
  • M62 TU V8 - 1999-2001 (single VANOS drive by wire engine w/electronic throttle)

Again...depending on what you're doing (which wasn't explained)..."fit" & "work" may or may not apply...especially when it comes to electronics...all 3 of these engines are different & the DME/ECUs may have an EWS chip which has a ISN (individual serial number) burnt into it that will not operate in a simple engine swap (engine "fits" but doesn't "work").

Question

Now I'm confused. I have a 2000 740i with a double Vanos.??????
At least that is what I was told after I bought a single Vanos engine to replace mine.
Also my original engine had a water cooled alternator and the one I bought has an air cooled alternator. If the engine will "work", then I'm set to install it. I know it physically will fit.

Thanks.

The first BMW V8 that was double VANOS was the S62 used in the e39 M5. The 2nd BMW V8 engine with double VANOS was the N62. The only v8 BMW engines installed on the e38 were mentioned above...and for the 2000 model year, BMW used the M62TU V8 engine which was only SINGLE VANOS. Which as you mentioned...uses a water cooled alternator...as well as electronic throttles above each cylinder...thus there is no accelerator or cruise control cables that would be needed for installing a SINGLE VANOS M62 engine in your 2000 e38. You will also need a different accelerator pedal and throttle body and DME and aux cooling fan, etc, etc, etc.

There are some parts that are interchangeable...but the M62 & M62TU are not just an easy plug-n-play swap.

There were no E38s with a V8 engine with double VANOS. The only double VANOS engines used by BMW during the production run of the e38 from 1995-2001 were the:
  • M52TU - I6 (1999-up 728i & various other BMW models)
  • M54 - I6 (2001-up various BMW models)
  • S62 - V8 (e39 M5 & e52 Z8)

E38 models imported to the USA:

Ok, now I got it. I think I had non vanos and vanos confused with single vanos and double vanos.
The engine I bought had one solenoid on the drivers side. The engine in the car has one on each cyl head.
Im such an idiot......
Thanks for the lesson.
