My 2008 x5 3.0 transmission jerk

When my 2008 X5 3.0 is cold and I stop at a light, and then take my foot off the gas the car feels as if it jerks into gear. Sometimes this is a severe jerk. BMW can not find anything wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

Has BMW verified what you are reporting? ie have they say in the car with you, agreed "that is wrong" and when they wrote up the work order it says "Verified complaint of XYZ".

You NEED to get that on paper to move towards a repair.

People have been ground down for years with the old "Customer states XYZ" and "Investigated, no problem found- all good".

A dealer will not be paid by BMWNA for poking around and trying to troubleshoot your issues.....so they really do not want to document an issue, when there is not obvious fault/fix.

My 2 cents

X5 jerks after stopping

Thanks for the reply. I let BMW have one of their mechanics take the car overnight. He did not notice the problem. I find that incredible. I guess I will have to take a ride with a service person. In the mean time I was wondering if anyone out there has experienced this proble?

Hopefully you understand my tact. Until you have something IN WRITING that says you have an issue, YOU HAVE NO ISSUE!

They can rope-a-dope you for months/years with the jerky tranny thing.....

One thing necessary to understand is exactly when your warranty expires. If it's close and you don't start building a paper-trail, you're definitely going to get the run-around. Trust me, as soon as it's completely out of warranty, they'll be able to diagnose that problem without any trouble.

Check over on the X3 (E-83) board for a sticky about their 3.0 6 speed A/T problems! It apparently crosses over to the ZF sourced boxes (X5) as well as the GM6 boxes (X3). Kind of shouts "BMW software" vice a hardware problem to me. All BMW seems to do for them is a series of "reflashes" and "updates". Some of which seems to work and some does not.

Dear Thread:

I just traded my 05 x 4.4 for a new x6. I did have the same problem with the x5. it took sveral trips to the dealership..they always side nothing indicated a problem. Finally one day all of the dashlight lit up-it truned out to be a transfercase issuse and that was replaced under waranty. did not have that problem after that..At 106,000 miles it started acting up again and wit the warnaty out, 6,000 back, I traded it in.

I tried to get an responce on why I had to work so hard to get this address before no responce from my dealership!

I have the same problem on cold start. I bought it into the dealership today and I hope they can fix the problem. There is even a Service bulletin on the problem. I think it was SIB 240308.

This is a known issue, which was addressed by a software update. My 2008 X5 3.0 was reprogrammed under warranty last May. My RO (repair order) states:
"Selected and ran test plan 246001 for faulty shifting. SI 24 04 08 addresses a shifting complaint that matches this vehicle's software level and production date. Vehicle is being programmed for complaint line i".
No problems at all after the reprogramming - shifts like a hot knife through butter now.

There is no guarantee this is your problem (and if you are out of warranty, I bet it's a darn expensive remedy), but it's probably worth a shot. Can you take yours to a different dealer?

Thank you sooooo much for the info. The car is still under warranty and I will pursue this issue with the dealer.

I got my X5 back and they addressed the SIB 24 04 08 and the transmission does run very smooth, just like how quackbury described it. No more transmission jerk as well.

Another satisfied customer! If you want to show quack your appreciation, you can send me a bottle of single malt. Happy to provide you with the address if you PM me.

[Seriously, glad it worked out for you.]

I wonder if this somehow relates to my hard downshift problem at a rolling stop...
