Looking at a 530i V8 wagon

Hi there,

I've had many wagons in the past and always liked the design of the BMW touring. We currently have a 530i 2007 and love it. I'm looking a 1995 wagon for sale and have a few questions.

Besides HP, are there any quality or major performance differences between the 1995 530i V8 and the 1996 540i V8? After reading other posts, what else should I look at besides the fuel pump, intake gaskets and what is an idler puff? Are the electronics overall reliable? How about the dual sunroof. I read that some have had issues with the sunroof but overall, if its maintained properly, it should work as it should, right? Any other major areas to consider? From what I'm told, the car, owned by female (original owner), has been maintained by both the dealer and indy shop its entire life.

There's a ride for sale that I'm considering that is well maintained and has under 100k miles. Thanks for the insight!

MPG on the m60b30 is terrible. City driving, I get 15 mpg. If you do mostly city driving, you'll want to get a different car if mpg concerns you. Otherwise, you'll get your m60b30 naysayers. "It's a mistake of an engine." Mine runs very smoothly, has good oomph and the e34 design is much nicer than the e39 imo. Get a manual if you can, it'll make the car much more desireable. If it's an auto, the shifts should be very smooth. There should not be any jerkiness at all. If there is, that means the tranny is on it's way out.

At less than 100K miles, you'll need to be prepared to do some maintenance such as suspension overhaul, possible cooling system overhaul (hoses, waterpump etc.) possible fuel pump replacement, valve cover gasket and so on. If you can get service records, that will help a lot. The lower door edges are very prone to rust so make sure you check them from the inside. You'll be able to see it bubbling. If it's not rusted too badly, you can stop it with POR-15 or something similar. Overall, there's nothing "major" that goes wrong with these cars. You'll hear horror stories of fan failures where the fins of the fan break off during operation and cause havoc under the hood, but it shouldn't sway you from a purchase. Have no idea what an "idler puff" is. Did you mean idler arm?

Do you have a link you could post up for us?

re the touring dual roof, the main issue is not that they dont work, but they leak like crazy as the seals are long since started to perish, and the seals are, afaik, no longer available from BMW.

my E34 touring is a non-sunroof model, quite rare for touring.

Thanks guys for the insight. From talking with owners, it appears to be well kept and up to date on service. I'll find out today if any of these trouble points have ever been addressed. The link is below to view.

The price seems a bit high. I just got a 540i from 1995 with 100k on it for 3000. For 8000 It had better be PERFECT.....and i wouldnt put to much stock into what the owners say unless they are trusted friends. they are trying to get rid of their car.

i like the car, low miles is cool. but 8000$ for an e34?

you could by any model e34 and over hual it for that. get what you really really want..

i have a 95 540i and love that m60b40, always wanted to drive an m60b30. 286hp vs 220 hp is a bit and worse gas milage.. no thanks

a 3 liter v8 though. thats cool

I JUST THINK A BMW CONNOISSEUR CAN DO FAR BETTER WITH 8,000 DOLLARS..

THATS OVER 4 OF MY 1995 540I/ 6

Mint condition pretty much answers most of your questions, southern car, low miles.
My guess is that car is near perfect with lots of miles of trouble-free driving left.
The 3.0 is butter smooth and nearly bullet proof (check the forums for those with well over
200k, and even 300k miles and no major repairs)

Most female drivers bring their cars to a dealer or an indy because
1. they lack the tools to service the car (better to spend that money on cosmetic or shoes) and
2. they don't want to get dirty (that's what boyfriends and husband are for).

Most female owners that I know will only throw money into a car when the car has a problem. They won't replace the brake until the light is on the dash, they won't replace the battery until the car won't start any more. If a mechanic tells them that the oil leak will cost them a couple of grand to fix, they will just drive it like that until the oil light comes on to remind them to put oil into the engine. With the constant need to put oil into the engine because of an oil leak they won't do a regular oil change because their reasoning is that they are putting new oil into it so it doesn't need to have the oil change.

Brought my share of cars from female owners.

Womans quote, " what, how could my engine go bad.. That oil lights only been in for like a week, if it were serious wouldn't it start to beep or blink or somthing?".

I've also heard the worst noises ever to be made from a car, while they still drive it like nothings wrongs..

Ive heard what sounds like 3 out of 4 cconnecting rods snapped a and are clanking around. Or they drive it while it looks like it is on fire and pooring smoke..

They love to drive with covers panels or an axle dragging the ground!! I told her and she said, i know,, is it that bad??

They love to ride that flat tire 40 miles on the shoulder all the way into town if there alone. And have triple A anyways

When you see a, lets say suburban or somthing being pushed to gas stations by 5 people who were just near by while the driver who ran it out of gas steers.. In my city this is always a girl who did not stop for gas.

Finally,, my own girl.. Quote. " when the gas light comes on a 3rd time it means it!".

And she ads oil when i actually here it sound ruff.. She knows it needs to be checked weekly but no way!

Im only ok with that becuase it is a honda, i hope it blows up completely and i can get her a decent make!

Wishful thinking, it's a honda, it can run just on the oil that clings to the dipstick.

Update on my interest,
I have not done anything yet but the wagon is still for sale. I agree with 356, the car is priced high and does appear close to perfect. Originally, I thought about offering 5000 but after reading the posts, that seems too high.

The owner suggested that I talk to the mechanic about its history. So I called the guy and he offered to meet and go through all of the service records. Overall, the mechanic said it was solid. he said the owner brought it in for everything from regular service to adding wiper fluid...

In the end, I'm a wagon nut and hate to see this really nice car go by the wayside. My reason for hesitation is that I don't exactly need another car, I'm in the middle of a start up and to top it off, taxes are due in a few weeks....so in the end, my timing is off...

Id say 4 - 5k is right if what you say is true.. Sounds awfully convienent to have personal tech who raised the car it whole life with nothing better to do than go threw old service records to convince you it is a good car.. Without exterior motive, it is Very odd to say the least, and the only one probably!

Do you have any interest in purchasing a bridge by chance? I will get you a smoking great deal on one!

Do you have a bridge for sale? Were you the guy that sold the "London Bridge" to that other guy in AZ?
