$17,500 Bicycle

One nice bicycle but $17,500??? WOW... That is the price of a nice Ducati or BMW Motorcycle.

I like what I overheard in a bike store before when a customer looked at a really expensive bike ($5,000 - $8,000 perhaps, not as expensive as this one). He asked the sales person if this bike is going to make him faster, and the sales guys said, "Nope, the only thing that'll make you go any faster are your legs."

Of course, that's not fully true, but for the fact is, for most hobby cyclists, a bike like this would be an utter waste of money.

< 10k for a bike seems reasonable.

17k is stretching it, but what a sweet bike!

17k is not a stretch. I'll just put it on my credit card that has a 24 percent APR.

There's a lot of things I could buy with an extra 17k. A bike isn't one of them

I'd never give more than $500 (maximum) on a bike. I'd easily shell out $30K on a motorbike though

Ummm I couldn't even get a wheel for my bike for 500 lmao.
...you couldn't give me a 'motorbike' for free though.

To each his(or her) own I suppose...

It often looks to me that manufacturers take advantage of people with a hobby they are enthusiastic about. For just one little extra feature, you'll pay a couple of thousands more than the next in line product which is "only" a 99.9% of the other.

You ride out of passion and usually people don't put a price on any hobby they do out of love and passion - it's just a matter of affordability. I'd ride just for fun like with a BMX or Mongoose. When I weight train my expenses can reach $1K monthly easily but to most people that's probably crazy. To each his/her own

Would this not apply to every Ferrari sold to a non car racer? Or any other street legal race car sold to someone not racing?

I see people posting about (really siily) expensive watches.... Or other baubles... 'worth' and 'waste' are totally relative

Hard to say. We built a house about 10 years ago for a Stanford surgeon inventor with very deep pockets - about 60 medical patents including the first balloon catheter. He told me once that every friend of his who ever bought a Ferrari regretted it.

One's resources are always finite. Devoting large portions of those to cheap thrills can be something one comes to regret. Hindsight is easy. Foresight is the trick.

Like $3,100 coffee grinder for somebody who already has a $1,500 espresso grinder?

I hear they're spendy. Supposedly they were designed so third worlders could have easier access to bikes w/o the same access to high quality alum that the west has. I'm guessing less expensive models are built elsewhere.

Aluminum still has its applications, but you don't really see it in high end bikes any longer. I imagine that old fashioned chromoly steel is still probably cheaper.

I suppose you could look at it that way.

However, the difference to me is that if I had that bike, I would likely not suddenly be able to ride twice as fast or twice as far. With a Ferrari, I legitimately could take it to a drag strip and floor the hell out of and be much faster than with a Honda Civic.

My bike cost me about $1,000. Had I paid 5 times that much, which you easily can in any dedicated bike store, I wouldn't increase my performance 5 times. I probably would be hard pressed increasing it by 20%. It's me who's holding that $1,000 bike back, not the other way around.

If someone is happy spending $17k on that bike than surely it is not a waste, I agree.

strangely cromoly steel has gone up in price over the years. hi-ten steel is still cheap though.

It's the same in the automotive world. There are people who will pay $300.000 or more for an exotic vehicle. Will it be 3x faster than a $100.000 vehicle? Probably not. But more an exercise in engineering and "what we can do".

I have hauled DH bikes in the back of my X3 which were worth roughly the residual value of the X3 itself. The downhill tires on my bike cost as much as many passenger vehicle tires, and some of the servicing is mighty expensive as well.

There's a buyer for everything......

Some people would say that spending $10K for a handbag is ridiculous when you can get one that looks similar for $100.

The word "there" can appear as a pronoun, as in “over there".

"Their" is a possessive pronoun. In a phrase like “Susan and Bill's car,” it could be used to to make a new phrase: “their car.”

”They're” is a contraction of “they are.”
“They are” should always be able to replace “they're.”

Extra credit: It's "I'm looking for an M3" not "I'm looking for a M3".

What a rip-off. My old used Cannondale can go just as fast and it was thrift store priced at $200.

Great. How many miles did you put on it a year?
