Start Stop Engine Shut Off

How do you disable the start/stop engine shut off when at idle without pushing the button?

As I understand it, you have three options:

1) Use the button

2) Some say a quick off, then on again action on the brake pedal as you come to a halt will cause the car to ignore the auto off / restart squence. But you need to do it everytime you come to a stop, i.e., every light, etc.

3) Code the car so that its disabled by default. This is the most technically challenging / involved option, but as I understand it, not all that hard once you have the software and cables, etc.

There is of course option 4 - Hit the car with a sledge hammer until the start /stop function stops working. It has the upside of working 100% of the time, but may have some unwanted ancillary damage to everything else.

4) Turning the wheels should also work.

I believe you're to "pump" the brake pedal. Push it down, then push it HARD, then back to normal.

Read that somewhere.

I got around to getting a cable and downloading the free coding software. Coded it so it remembers that I selected it off. It's FANASTIC. No more worrying about it. Worth every penny of the $25.00 I paid for the cable. It wasn't that hard. Also got rid of all safety belt warnings and chimes and all disclaimers. Now my car is truly awesome !!!

Move the shifter to Sport mode (left) and it will disable Auto Start/Stop

Just drove an Audi in Europe and the same "jerky" movement was evident on that car in the Auto/start mode. Don't understand why BMW is forcing us to disable it everytime we start the engine. It should be other way around, at least in my opnion.

Bought the cable from a forum member named ImSW1. He makes them then sells them for cheap. I downloaded all the free software from here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=624780

good luck, its pretty easy if you just go step by step.

Actually sometimes I think that in this case it is the EPA that knows what is best for you!

Whether is BMW or EPA, still very annoying. I hope BMW will redesign this feature in next models because between this and the "sedan" like drive i'll have to reconsider my next car. In my case it's usually the first traffic light which reminds me to disable the Auto stop feature.

I checked with the dealer about auto stop/start--BMW will cover completely disabling auto stop/start one time during ownership. Check with your dealer.

Ditto,

They told me if I wanted to they would reverse it at no charge so the default would have the Auto S/S off unless you activated it. I'm hardly in stop & go traffic so it's not an issue, I have experimented with the brake where you press it in a little harder then release some pressure, it takes a little practice to get the feel for it but its probably easier to just push the button at that point.

I had my car in for serves and mentioned how much I hated the auto stop/start. My SA told me that BMW will allow the coding to disable it under warranty. So they did it for me for free. If it bothers you that much ask your dealer.

My dealer recoded for me so that it stays at the last used setting-obviously OFF!!
Now if I could only get the orange light off I'd be even happier.
A really stupid feature.

This feature should be something you opt on not off. These cars are all computerized, you should have more control over its setting without the need to recode its firmware. With the new Onx o/s the user defiantly has the ability, don't know why BMW does not give it to them.

I put a tiny strip of black p-touch label, the same size as the light, over the light. You can't even tell its there, but it makes the light just right to see. Barely visible in the daylight, just enough to verify that it is still in disabled state. at night it is a little brighter, but not nearly as blinding as it was before. Having this dumb A-S-S feature disabled has increased my driving pleasure 1000%.

ASS, as implemented by BMW, is clearly flawed. I would be very curious to know how is the situation in Audi and Porsche. These two companies also put ASS in most of their 2013/2014 MY cars.

It sucks. Perhaps in the USA where automatics are the norm, people daydream for 10 seconds before leaving a light and consider 10 car lengths close its not an issue. However, I've driven manual trans Audi's in Europe and the system stinks. The engines simply take too much time to be able to handle rapid clutch take-ups.
