Next CT/NJ/NY meeting - DATE TBD - let's pick a venue

This is going to the second meet of the season on the back a very successful first one at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn this past Mar. 23 2012. Click here for the thread with over 170 pictures!

Preliminary idea:

Lake Mohonk Mountain House - first half of May 2013 - less than two hours from NYC.

I have been there several times and it's both a very pleasant scenic drive to get there and a great venue.
The pic above is what it looks like in summer.

Going to call them to discuss logistics (parking for 40 cars), a food buffet, activities for adults and kids as well as lodging to offer as an option to members who would want to make a week-end get-away out of this.

Info:

The Wikipedia entry of the Mohonk Mountain House is here.

Their web site is here.

The Mohonk Mountain House, also known as Lake Mohonk Mountain House, is a historic American resort hotel located on the Shawangunk Ridge in Ulster County, New York. Its prominent location in the town of New Paltz is just beyond the southern border of the Catskill Mountains on the western side of the Hudson River. Two important policy conferences of domestic and international significance have taken place at the hotel.

What's the big idea here?

We have nice toys, parking and admiring them feels like a compromise.
Why not drive them together and still meet to chat and spend some time with food in hand at the destination?

The destination/ venue should also be an interesting one for everyone.
Bring your girlfriend, wife, kids - loved ones who should be able to partake a little more than by just tagging-along.

Is this day-trip?

Yes, we would form a caravan for those who would want to join, drive up, have a nice lunch, some fun all afternoon and finally drive back.
If you prefer to stay the night, I'll talk to them about extending a special night rate or we can look-up hotels in the area.

Any other ideas?

This is harder to pull-off but I have contacted the Monticello Raceway, which is not too far.
I figure if the Mountain House idea doesn't work-out, more people might show-up if the meet is at the track!
Apr 1 2013 Edit: turned down, "members-only destination".

If anyone is in the business of selling something to BMW owners and our meets are of interest, please contact me, we need your money/ sponsorship!

Mar. 26 Edit: added weather and alternative venues.

Weather Forecast for April (May isn't avail. yet):

****** As an alternative, Edgewater, NJ:

It's close enough for everyone in the boroughs around NYC to get to.
Right on the water, nice views and plenty of parking, in particular if meeting on a Sunday when all businesses are closed, except for the ones serving food, like Mitsuwa.

All on River Road:

1) I'll contact Starbucks but I doubt they'll want to host anything.

2) we could meet at Mitsuwa Marketplace. It's a Japanese supermarket but it also has a buffet court of sorts with pretty good food.
It'd a nice Japanese experience.
Behind their secondary building, there is a whole strip of parking spots we could take-up.. See top right corner rectangle below.

3) If you guys would like to hit a few golf balls, we can pick the Edgewater Golf Range.
They have plenty of parking and they may be more interested in hosting our meet.

See the Google Map screenshot for all three choices and their respective parking space.

****** Other alternative, Englewood, NJ

Boat Basin & Picnic Area north of the George Washington Bridge
:

With a picnic, playground and visitor center.
Click the screenshots below to go to the Google Maps.

****** Other alternative, Fort Lee, NJ

The Ross Dock Picnic Area on the Henry Hudson Dr.
A little closer to the bridge (doesn't come up on Google Maps), just 0.5 miles north of the GWB

Also with a picnic, playground and visitor center.
Click the screenshots below to go to the Google Maps.

I would like everyone to propose alternative venues and dates.

Great location. Been there once. It would be great for people who'll show up with family/kids/GF.

Looks like a great place for a meet. I won't be able to make it at the end of April because the wife is going to Asia for work for 2 weeks and I'll have full baby sitting duties with my daughter. She would not be happy being in the back of the bimmer by herself for a 2hour drive nor would I be sane person by the time i get there with all the screaming that will go on in the car the whole time.

Wife will be back first week of May so I will be free again but don't change the dates for me. I can always go to the next one. There is also another Big meet going on in Long Island on April 7th if you guys are itching for another gathering soon. - http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...=787989&page=6

Personally I'm not big on meets with drives. I much prefer having it a nice central location where people can just come and go. I've gone to enough of these meets through the years that i've seen quiet a few incidents when it comes to the drive/cruise part esp. when its a large group. There is always someone showing off and that can get nasty fast because once you get a bunch of fast cars together with testosterone filled drivers it can get out of hand VERY quickly.

I like the area by Edgewater simply because its not too far from the city and its a huge parking lot. Wife and kids can go shopping while the guys can check out the cars and chit chat. Ideally we would def. need blessing by them ahead of time because I am pretty sure they would kick us out with over 15-20 cars showing up. I wonder if the starbucks there would be interested in hosting this in their lot at edgewater. Nice parking and coffee. Sounds perfect to me lol.

Alan

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Admittedly I was trying to get away from the parking lot experience.

Updated the OP with info about Edgewater.

I love mitsuwa , especially that view of the river facing NYC.
I'm a bit concerned about the parking thou, because it is always crowded during lunch time 12-3pm.

There's also a park great for recreation with great view of the lake, me and my gf always go here at the weekend to stroll around, people here can also can go fishing here, go kayaking, cycling and have a big parking lot.

I love Mitsuwa. The food is amazing and the view is great. It's very closeby and I'm very familiar with the area. End of April feels too far for me lol, I'm craving a meet sooner. I have spring break starting this Friday until next Tuesday, so maybe in between them (not to make you guys revolve your schedule around me). Sounds good so far, looking forward to seeing it happen!

Would surely do Edgewater, NJ - 45 minutes away from LI is far more doable than 2.5 hours away - but would like to give it a month or so for prime weather... I suggest Sunday, May 5th at 1 PM, and to open this one up to BMW's and Mercedes' of all models and vintages!

I think you mean March 28 or April 5, both of which are not Sundays. I just know that any date between March 29 to April 7th sounds good.

I've been to a meet at Roosevelt Park in Edison, NJ. It is right next to the Menlo Park Mall, giving family members the ability to shop. The park is quite big with plenty of parking areas. A few meets have been there over the years.
http://binged.it/15NUws7

While I've never heard of meet at Garret Mountain Park, it is a pretty good place, as long as it's not too crowded that day. A couple of parking areas are available, including one that has a lookout over Paterson. And while it is in Paterson, it is really quite a nice park that I go to frequently.

This is the discussion I was hoping for. We have a few good options here for the venues.

To help steer the conversation about the date, the OP now shows the weather forecast for April.

Meanwhile I just want to mention what happens on the west coast when they call out an owners meet:

There are also a couple of picnic areas right on the Hudson front just north of the George Washington bridge.

Updated the OP with map/ location.

This one in particular looks good:

A little close to the bridge (doesn't come up on Google Maps), jst 0.5 miles north of it: The Ross Dock Picnic Area

I feel like if we give it some more time and push the date to around end of April or May, you will have a better turnout, only because the weather will definitely be better/warmer.

My vote is for sometime in May but not on Memorial Day weekend since people will have family plans.

I believe most of them want a ready served meal w/o too much involvement.

I am down. Location looks great. I am a bit concerned with the distance though. In NY/NJ traffic this may easily end up being a 3h trip one way (at least for me). I realize that may not be the case for everybody though.

It would be at least a 3 hour trip for me, so not too feasible. Personally, I would rather spend money for a pay toilet than the toll into NYC. Nothing personal against anyone living up there, and if that's your thing, I'm happy for you. I grew up in Elizabeth, just across the bridge from Staten Island. I do not miss the potholes, insane traffic, and general chaos however. Even now when I travel north, I never go through the city...Tapan Zee only.
I would be interested in getting together if the meet was in more of a central Jersey location. That might give more of us an opportunity to attend.
