This just in: BMW Apps now supports four more apps

This is exciting news for me, since I am a heavy user of Apps. The newly supported apps are Glympse, Audible, TuneIn, and Rhapsody. Those will join the ranks of Pandora, MOG, Stitcher, and BMW connected.

That's some great news, I love the TuneIn radio app. Good bye Sirius.

I have never used TuneIn. Is it better than the web radio component of BMW Apps?

This is just a press release. Wait till the apps themselves are updated.

TuneIn already power the web radio component of BMW connected app.

Goto the BMW app and goto settings > information.

There is one change that will happen though using tunein radios app directly. It will support more radio stations.

Web radio in BMW connected does not support WMA streams. The tunein radio app does.

You will also get cover art depending on the show you are listening too. Why BMW didn't just update the web radio component is beyond me ... But something tells me BMW are trying to move ownership of apps to the app owners themselves and loose the dependency.

That's fine but until they figure out a way to automatically launch a app from the car interface that currently isn't running the whole system is flawed and quite frankly dangerous. This is somewhat of a stop gap anyway.

The next iteration of idrive connected features will see more feature rich apps (beyond those within bmw assist or bmw internet) exist on the cloud and you will no longer need the smartphone for apps directly.

my car came with bmw apps.
i have yet to use the feature.
i am considering both the cost and conveniece of what i am now using, and what i would use with the bmw app tunein.

let me see if i have this right.
first step is to install bmw app on my iphone 5?
i went there a couple of days ago and saw a ton of negatives for the app.
so i backed out.

so after i install the app. on my phone
every time i enter the car i need to have the phone on and set to what?
what do i neded to have the car set to?

will it be a wireless or wired connection from the phone to car?
if it works through bluetooth it will be draining down my phone battery.
to those who been using it, what affect has it had on phone data useage?

i currently have sirius for $25. every 6 months.
i have no idea was 6 months of cell phone data would be.
aside from the cost im also interested in the convenience factor, and the musical programming.

To get started:

1. Install BMW Connected on your iPhone.
2. Install MOG on your iPhone.
3. Connect your iPhone to the USB connector in your car.
4. Start the BMW Connected app.
5. Start MOG.
6. Press the Media button on your iDrive controller.
7. Select MOG from the list.
8. Use MOG on your iDrive.

What happens next:

If you do not lock your phone, then BMW Connected stays on and you can connect and disconnect your phone from the USB connector and still be connected. So if you exit your car and come back to your car and want to use MOG:

1. Connect your iPhone to the USB connector in your car.
2. Assuming you did not lock your phone, start MOG.
3. Press the Media button on your iDrive controller.
4. Select MOG from the list.
5. Use MOG on your iDrive.

If you leave your phone in your car (either on purpose or by accident), when you get back into your car, MOG will immediately begin playing again, but the iDrive display will not be inside the MOG app for some reason (I think this is a bug). So these are the steps:

1. Press the Media button on your iDrive controller.
2. Select MOG from the list.
3. Use MOG on your iDrive.

These same steps apply to Pandora. I have not used any other app than these two on my iDrive.

Generally it works. It's not as seamless as it should be, but it works. I really like using MOG to play an artist channel (where it will randomly play songs from only one artist regardless of album). And I like the specific variety of Pandora. So I think it is a win to have the apps feature.

Regarding data usage, I am a grandfathered AT&T unlimited user. But you will pay something like $10-$15/month for an extra 2GB with Verizon so it isn't much even if you need more. And I would be surprised if you used 2GB more of data by listening to music through your phone.

Hope this helps.

-Corey

corey...thanks for taking the time to type it all out.
no i do not lock my phone .....what is mog?
i have a family plan for data. currently have 4 gb will soon increase it to 6.

i guess i have nothing to lose by trying the above steps.
im sure once all the install steps are in place ,the remaining steps are then reduced, everytime i enter my car and want music.

i found this video on mog,and pandora...the free version is all that is needed? they also have basic, and primo.

I can't remember if MOG lets you use the phone app without paying or not. I know you have to pay to get the 320 bit rate. It's $5/month or something like that.

I like music too so don't mind paying $5/month here or there for good services like Pandora and MOG.

i also like music and dont mind paying a nominal fee for the service ,which is what i have been doing with sirius.
at $25. for six months its like 5 bucks a month when you include taxes.
im satisfied with their musical library and selections. and all i need to do when i want music is push the on button.

im somewhat concerned going with the app is gonna be more steps.
and might possibly be equal to or be more money, depending if there are any monthly fees in addition to data useage.
