Advice: Keep or Sell

Hi everyone,

Looking for a bit of advice on my 98 4-door M3, 5-speed. I had the car up for sale at $7k when a buddy of mine borrowed the car and jumped a median..

He'd helped pay for damages but the car is no longer 100%. I did not use insurance for the repairs because it only had liability insurance.

Right now, the car has some minor body damage. Scratches on the passenger fender and door. The engine is rough; bad head gasket that is leaking coolant into the engine to create smoke when I first start up. BUT, no coolant in the oil.

Sad to say, I cannot sell the car for the original asking price and now I just spent $2800 getting it back on the road. All new control arms, shock mounts, heat shield, engine and transmission mounts, etc.

I'm sure I can handle the body damage and paint stuff on my own and get it to LOOKING pretty. SO now that I have more money in it, should I just keep it? Or try and get rid of it for$4-5k?

Engine still runs strong, just the smoke for a while.

Any advice would be appreciated. Just been racking my brain and would appreciate any help.

You could part it out? If it was me I would just keep it and fix it. You won't get much for it with all those problems.

Did you kill your buddy?

Did you repair the engine properly? You could still pass it off for 5k or so.

sounds to me like it already had some engine issues prior to the incident, i dont know if 7k was realistic even then to be honest.....

Thanks everyone. Decided to keep it and fix everything as I go. Picked up an SUV to drive around. My buddy is still alive but definitely doesn't get to be near any of my current or future cars. Once I get settled financially, I'll get to her and keep everyone here posted on the total rebuild I'm planning.

Keep it & turn it into a street legal track car.

Eh, if your looking to settle down financially then you should just sell it and move on. Unload it on Craigslist for a deal and call it a day.

Thanks everyone

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the input. Sold her about 2-3 weeks ago to a mechanic fixing a car up for this kid in Southern CA.

Kid's 17.. Dear god, I hope he changes his mind. I would've gotten into too much trouble at 17/18 wuth my E36.

Thanks again for all the advice. Looking to get back into the E36 family again sometime soon!
