My Car:

2011 BMW 328Xi with Cold Weather and iDrive package with 18,000 miles

Due note, that it has a previously salvage title since it was in a freak accident when my Uncle owned it and was issued a salvage title over damage to the front right fender and headlight. ($3500 in repairs @ BMW dealership)

1. Trade it in: $25,500 is the cash offer I got for it from my local BMW dealer. They had an IDENTICAL BMW for sale @ $43,000 that has 17,500 miles. The guy since it has that previously salvage title, it lowers the value a lot. I understand but that is much lower than what I was expecting. I did not ask how much more I would get if I traded it it, if there would even be a difference?

2. Trade it in to a used car lot: $26,500 is the offer I got from them. Originally they offered me $24,000 but when I showed them the BMW dealer offer, they added $1000 to it to make it $26,500.

3. Private Party Sale: I listed in my local classifieds and as I got a few calls last week. I listed it for $30,000 but I think I would get haggled down to $27,500. Anyways one of them was serious about buying the car and had cash on hand. We met up and he drove a 06 3-series and was looking for a new one and was very knowledgeable about the car. Would not be surprised if he/she was on this forum...

Now there are a few cars I had in mind:

-2011 550Xi
-2011 528Xi
-2013 328Xi
-2010 M3

I know each of those cars have their own pros and cons. I am leaning towards the 550 or a new 328.... Any input on which I should get?
What insurance company declares a car a total loss due to needing $3500 in repairs? That's nucking futs.

Unfortunately for you, with NEW 335i's out there for over ten grand off sticker your competition is steep.

Apparently State Farm. The same thing happened with my Dad's 2010 Honda Insight. He paid $19,935 for the car and THE NEXT DAY someone backed into the left side of the car when it was parked next to the curb for 5 minutes so he could run in and grab some tennis gear he left behind. It was declared a loss over the rear bumper, rear left door, and rear tail light. He got back more than he paid $20,100 and bought back the Insight at auction for just $12,500. Cost $2800 at a local indy. Car has been going strong for almost 3 years now.

Some insurance companies will just declare total losses in order to basically cook the books.... If it benefits them in raising their supposed costs and/or lowered their profit, they will do whatever is necessary. :

That is true but those have MSRP off $53 for a similarly equipped car like mine. Even at $43, that is a big difference between $30 and $43k.... Worst case scenario, $26,500 CASH from a dealer.... Granted they will mark it up and sell it for $35 or so down the line, I still end up with $26,500! I found a 2011 M3. Great color and nicely equipped. Asking $38,900....

Lol, you should see some of the crap that AmFam tried pulling. There are cars in NJ auctions that have been labeled as flood cars yet, no water was even close to them.... You can get a 2013 E350 for $20-$25 off sticker....

I am sure that you probably know this, but the dealership with that M3 (in Wallingford CT) only sells salvaged title cars.

The CLA is nice and all but I just don't like the rear taillights.... A bit to abstract for me.

Next car ... there are many choices and depending on the budget; we can make suggestions. M3 is a very balanced car.

As to the salvage car ... let it go back to the BMW dealer and get rid of the headache unless you know someone that would run it 100k PLUS MILES.
It will always be tough to sell in an honest way.

I was unaware that it was a salvage title since it did not state that on the Cars.com page.

My budget is around $15,000 + whatever I get for my current car. It seems like around $40-$42,500. I think an M3 is out of my price range. Maybe next time....

The ones I see are 2008-2009 M3's for around that.

Yeah to each their own. I'm not totally thrilled with my 335i and just saw the CLA AMG and for some reason it really excited me. The 360hp from a I4! Still a little more than I would like to pay but this may be a good reason to switch brands when Im done with my lease. I'll have to see what the M235i looks like.

I would never buy an unknown salvage title car. The only reason I have the one I have currently is because I know it's complete history...

That being said I think I will have to stick with a 5-series.

This is why you want the car:

Yeah, I love the CLA front, but those taillights kill it for me. I actually like the C300 but don't tell anyone cause I would get shanked.

Some insurance companies will just declare total losses in order to basically cook the books.... If it benefits them in raising their supposed costs and/or lowered their profit, they will do whatever is necessary. :
I have many years of auto insurance experience and have no idea why a claims adjuster would "constructively total" a vehicle that suffers damage equivalent to 1/10 its market value. Insurers struggle to lower their loss ratio, not increase it.

Total loss should be over 50% but IDK why they do it.

Lower their incomes for better tax rates?
