E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

variable steering assist?

I like the 128i; except steering wheel is too stiff at low speeds. I thought the option I need is variable steering assist (aka servotronic?) but it does not seem to be available as an option. Any ideas? what models have variable steering assist available?

My impression was that Servotronic (speed sensitive power steering boost) was standard on most if not all recent BMW models in the US. Maybe you are referring to the Active Steering option (available on some 1 series models) which also changes the steering ratio according to speed. I had the former on my 128i and E46 328i, and felt the steering to be a tad heavy, but very responsive. I have Active Steering on my 328i E91 and the steering is so light that it is really annoying and reminds me of the over boosted GM steering back in the 1960's.

When folks were complaining about heavy low speed steering on the 1999 BMW 3 series, they increased the steering boost for subsequent model years. By 2001, they changed it back due to so many "steering too light" complaints.

Ah, you are correct sir; I looked it up again and it seems that all US-spec 1er came with Servotronic (variable-assist power steering). However, should you be interested, I believe the 135i from all years (definitely the current model year) can be configured with Active Steering, which then adds variable-angle power steering. Personally, I hate it (parents have an E91 with AS, and it just doesn't feel...natural or linear), but it does fit the bill for the lighter steering you seek. If you haven't, go check one out at the dealer. The only downside being you'll have to shell out for a 135i model. And live with a 135i model (whether you like that or not is really your opinion and tastes).
