I believe that if we do preventative maintenance, everything will be fine. It's just that some of us are paranoid.

Are you going to Bimmerfest 2013?

Outside of normal maintenance the following has been replaced:

Radiator
Expansion tank
A couple PDC sensors

Just got the increased emissions error yesterday, its running fine so probably need a thermostat, goes in on Monday

Battery is weak, will need replaced soon.
did your increased emission light end up being the thermostat? Mine is up and car is running fine, just wondering.

about to turn 100,000 on my 05 vert. Had a few vert problems under warranty seems to be fine now. Replaced tranny under warranty seems to be fine now. At 100k there are a few creaks and I know I will spend around $3,000/yr for the next 2 years I have her but that's nothing for this car calibre. Next car is going to be a 2012 991. Overall very happy with the car for the last 4 years.

They won't fight as long as your wife gets the E63 and you get the F12 or vice versa

Wait another minute... 2004 645Ci 165K miles!!!

Friend's car came to me pretty sick:

Oil leaks - alternator mounting brakcet, cam covers, upper timing covers, vacuum pump, vanos solenoid o-rings.

Coolant leaks - return pipe, valley pan, water pump gasket.

Other - timing chain guides on their last legs (cylinders 5-8) all replaced, PDC module replaced, xenon headlight ballast module replaced due to water ingress.

Car flew through MoT here in UK with flying colours. Very, very happy!!!

This was the oil filter when I first got her:

These cars will last just like any other mechanical gear as long as you take car of it. Do your preventive maintenance guys and take car of the leaks as you see them. sick645ci shared a typical example of someone not taking care of things and the end results. I am amazed that the car lasted that long with the filter in pieces. Just like your body, if you feel something wrong, check it out. At least these cars will let you know something is a miss so fix it. A small thing can turn into a big headache real fast.

And again, a new winner. I feel like there may be some guys out there who might have 200k miles on their 6.

Nitrogen, did you ever have the coolant pipe issue? I'm just curious as your car seems to be running strong.

Not yet ...knock on wood! But I do have my valve covers leaking like crazy!! I need to do that job soon!! I don't know if I should do the pipe at the same time or no. Makes sense to to do it but time wise it's hard.

Just got back from the shop, one of the hoses going to the secondary air pump is broke. Should be a cheap fix.

I wonder how many miles it took for that filter to fail.

EU-spec 2004 645Ci 6MT Individual M-Technik, bought 2y ago at ~85k, now ~105k. Basically no issues. Mechanically sound, and fun to drive w/ all the manual & wacky ///M features… Daily driver… from mountains to autobahn & old medieval city. Every single mile behind this wheel makes me smile…

I don't really know what was done by the original owner in the past besides the usual maintenance, one paint job and all the applicable recalls (brake valve, instrument cluster) while still in warranty…

What was done by me:
  • Normal maintenance (oil, filters et al., wiper blades, brake fluid…)
  • Brakes done a few more times (yes, I track it ;] as well as a few shredded tyres ;D …)
  • (incl. handbrake pads and the whole rear brake assy.)
  • Battery replacement (AGM retrofit & recoding)
  • Reflashed failing iDrive
  • Xenons, AE & fogs replaced (not for effect but slowly hitting the bulb lifetime)
  • Terminal 30g relay replaced
  • Saggy window trim fixed
  • A/C flush
  • CDV delete & clutch bleeding
What needs to be done in the next month or two:
  • Control arm bushings
  • Thermostat
  • CCV
  • Diff fluid
  • Tranny fluid
  • Powersteering fluid
  • Solar sensor
  • F. Auc sensor
  • Failing license plate light modules
  • Engine bay cord "bump stops"
What's in the cards short-term (i.e. later this year in the next 15k):
  • Service II (= spark plugs, fuel filter assy., etc. … the big service)
  • SZL recall
  • Battery terminal recall
What's going slowly to hell (i.e. will need to be done in another ~50k):
  • Rear shock mount pads
  • Front wishbones etc.
  • Clutch
  • Diff bushing
  • Driveshaft bearing/joint
  • Cooling & vent hoses (preventively)

No leaks yet anywhere. Knock on wood. Very happy with the beast's service needs. The maintenance costs during the last 2y were laughable…

FIXED WHILE UNDER WARRANTY CPO:
mechatronics sleeve replaced
steering angle sensor
windshield washer pump
dash cluster failed
ARS block failure
convertible top-unlocked error, bracket fixed per TSB. Still occurs infrequently

REPAIRED MYSELF:
Vacuum Pump
Battery (2.5 year old battery)

REPAIRS NEEDED:
mechatronic sleeve or tranny pan - leaking
valve covers - leaking
Your valve covers are already leaking oil at 55,000 miles!?
