dinan vs BMW performance exhaust

HI everyone!

i am awaiting my new M3 to arrive... and i love the BMW performance exhaust, but the cost is high. does anyone know how the Dinan street exhaust stacks up against the BMW performance exhaust? i am most interested in sound. i want it to sound like a romping V8. i do not want a droning pain in the rear exhaust like some after market ones that i have heard for other cars.

can anyone give me some advice and an opinion? anyone have first hand experience with the dinan set up?

thanks

john

I have the same question and concern John - I would love to add the BMW performance exhaust to my M3 but the extremely high cost really is a deterrent. I am hesitant to add another exhaust but Dinan would be my second choice depending on feedback on how they both compare in terms of sound and drone.

I bit the bullet and ordered the performance exhaust to be installed at the port prior to state-side delivery. Will be interesting to do 8 days during European Delivery driving around with the stock exhaust and then take Performance Center Delivery with the performance exhaust installed.

Thinking about doing European Delivery? Read about my ED experience. Best trip, ever.

The Dinan has zero drone and definitely sounds better. And once you add the X-Pipe there is truly no comparison.........Phil

Dinan Exhaust

I agree with the Dinan comments. I have had the exhaust and racing mid pipes for almost two years and there is definitely no drone. Great sound and with the racing pipes even better and a significant power increase. What else is nice about the Dinan system, is when you want it to be and sound aggressive, it is, but if you want it more civil, then it is as well. I agree it is not inexpensive but the second best mod I have done.

thanks everyone. i have a question.. does the mid pipe give the emissions testing a fit? i figured that it would cause the car to fail the yearly emissions test in the states.

i think that it would be the way to go $4k for the bmw performance exhaust is very steep.

thanks again!

The Dinan mid pipe (X-pipe) has no cats so passing a state inspection will be tricky. Price wise, the Dinan is less expensive unless you add the x-pipe. One last thing some choose to overlook....once you remove the factory exhaust the rear end looks much more aggressive. That big ass can hanging back there looks bad IMO.................Phil

what do you mean by the rear end looking bad? doesn't the new dinan or BMW performance exhaust just sit in the stock location? or are the muffles large and hand down lower than the stock mufflers--there by looking stupid.

john

p.s. can you submit a pic of the rear end of your car?

If you look at the rear of a M3 with a stock exhaust, you'll see the entire rear section. Look at a car with aftermarket exhaust and you'll the rear diff and no large can. Basically the center section is now wide open.........Phil

Edit: Just added a rear shot of the performance exhaust

I had the Dinan (rear section only) on my e90 that I just sold. I loved it. I had the chance to hear the BMW performance exhaust today when I was at the dealer (ordering my new IB e92 M3 ). To be honest, I did not think it sounded that much different if at all. I will be ordering another Dinan to be installed when my new car arrives.

Sorry, I meant that I did not think it sounded that much different from the Dinan. I did not drive the car with the BMW Performance exhaust though. I just did a cold start, let it warm up, and a little bit if revving the engine.

I got the Dinan exhaust not too long ago. I agree that it does sound aggressive when you want it to be. It gets semi civilized but notice when I cruise my neighborhood people tend to look up so its not all that quiet. I don't really mind it but my wife jokes that she can hear me coming home.
