E39 (1997 - 2003)
The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki

Have you ever had the car running? Since it will not run with the wires reconnected there was a reason they were not and that is where you should focus your efforts. Finding out why it will not start with those wires connected and what components those wires are going to.

I had an indie mechanic tell me BMW is not going to provide 1" more wire than they need to. so stretch the wire out as far as it goes and you will find out where the plug goes. Each one has a different connector, so there is no way you can plug one in to the wrong socket. Sometimes you really have to hunt to find the corresponding plug.
