Does a 2000 520i have a check engine light on dash?

Hi guys,

I have been reading about and watched several videos of running the self test mode on E39's and am a bit confused. On two of the vdeos I watched, self test mode 2 was performed which lights all of the dash lights and sweeps the guages, but there was no check engine light lit anywhere on the dash. Am I missing something here or does this year not have it? I had a mechanic tell me someone removed the bulb on mine and Im not sure if hes correct.

The CEL/SES (check engine light/service engine soon) light never illuminated running TEST 2 on my e38/e39/e53. Not all countries require or adhere to an OBD II mandate...if yours doesn't, then that may be why the light doesn't illuminate when you first start the car. The CEL/SES light only illuminates to indicate that there's a fault in the electronic emissions system (for clean air)...its' not an indicator for things non-emissions related as some may assume that it does.

If you have it you can see where it should be in the cluster below (I'm assuming you have the low cluster)

Qsilver, thank you so much for the reply. This in invaluable info that ive been desperately trying to find. My car was manufactured in Germany in 99 and was first registered as a new vehicle here in HK. Id bet that as you mention, the CEL/SES light on this one is not used because of the different OBD regs as im assuming this car was built for export.

So if I understand correctly, this light is most likely non-functional at all on this model?

Also, what about the ABS light? The mechanic also mentioned that its not working either. Did that one light up during your seld tests?
