Brake problems with my 1990 525i

The ABS light stays on. First starting off in the mornings. The brakes make a funny Pac Man like sound and stopping is not good. Drive it a mile then the brakes sound and work normal. More than not the brakes make the noise and the pedal will become stiff then go to the floor pumping the brakes to bring the car to a stop. Note, sometime the car stop good with normal brakes. thanks for the help.
