Question

Spadae2-

Really like the wheels and tires. Didn't think staggered would work well w/X-drive - glad it does. What are the sizes of the wheels and the tires? thanks - thinking of maybe doing the same thing on mine - yours looks great.

Just use BMW spec. For BMW wheels 245/35/20 F - 8.5J, 275/30/20 R - 9J. Which has a rolling diameter of 25.5 and 25.8 {tire manufactures will vary}. If you purchase aftermarket wheels you can buy 9.5J for the rear and use 285/30/20 which have the same rolling diameter as the front. But I can tell you from my experience with Porsche, use the factory specs for wheel width and sizes. They did not just make them up. If you look in the F10 manual you will see these under the factory sizes as an option.

I had a 2010 750ixL Exclusive, with also ran a 20" Factory staggered setup with DINAN Stage 1 without issue.

Question

I'm going to get the 312 20" wheels (w/Michelin SS when they come off backorder). I'm pretty sure they don't come in 19", because that would be TOO easy, right? What I'm wondering is whether staggered wheels will be at ALL advantageous on my x-drive car? I'm thinking no, plus I like the idea of having 4 interchangeable wheels/tires all the same size (8.5" rims).

However, since I'm not exactly sure how the x-drive is implemented from a standing start, I'm not sure whether I'd be giving up any performance or not by just using 245x35x20's on 8.5" 312s all around. I could see where I would be on a rear-wheel drive car, but not sure on this x-drive.

I could use some experienced advice here - please chime in if you have some....Thanks

It only seems in the US that you get the same size on all four wheels. I wanted staggered setup to put more rubber on the road. In the summer at least. As I stated above I had a 2010 750ixL Exclusive, with also ran a 20" Factory staggered setup with DINAN Stage 1 without issue.

So far I put 500 miles on the F10 with Stage2 and pushing hard as I can in a straight line I have zero issues. In the corners it is wonderful. If you look in the F10 manual you will see it is a standard setup for the 20" wheel.

I only had the car for 9 days until updating to the DINAN Stage 2 ECU update. Which gives 500hp, 580tq

I'm trying to figure out whether there is some REAL benefit to having wider tires on the rears in my x-drive car, not whether it can be done without causing problems, as you have clearly stated.

For example, is 80% of the power to the rear wheels upon acceleration from a stop, with only 20% to the front? Or is it always 50/50, with allowances for wheel slippage, cornering, etc. I would imagine handling might be a bit better as well with wider rears, but I'm not sure if the x-drive pretty much cancels that out. This is what I'm trying to get some knowledge on.

Feedback please...

This test car demonstrates what a vast improvement the new generation of BMW's xDrive hardware represents over the last. The new version employs similar hardware to last year's, but the car now sends more torque to the rear wheels during cornering and has adopted a much-faster-acting computer system. Like the old system, the 2011 535i xDrive's has a default front-to-rear torque split of 40/60 percent. During cornering, the old all-wheel-drive 535xi maintained that split, but the new system moves to a 20/80-percent split to counter the understeer that plagued the old all-wheel-drive 5. Also aiding the 5's ability to rotate fluidly is a torque-vectoring system that applies the brake to the inside rear wheel while feeding a bit more power to the rear end-and therefore to the unbraked outside wheel-to compensate for the drag. Together with the quicker computer, these two features make for a very agile sedan

The car will handle much better with the staggered setup. Remember the stock wheel come with all season tires which in all seasons , snow.... You would want that. But that is a US thing. In the winter put on winter tires such as the Stottorzeros. You will have the best driving experience for ALL seasons.

If you have heavy snow on the ground most of the winter and want the best traction, then use the stock 19s with snow tires.

Interestingly, I just talked to a BMW Master Tech and he said not to do the staggered setup on my car. He said it would keep triggering the Traction Control, actually slowing the car down!. He said the way to go was to keep everything the same size.

Now I'm firmly of 2 minds...

Spadae2, love the wheels. Gives it that signature look as opposed to the stock M wheels that come with every F10 M Sport.

How much did those 312s cost?

He is know... Master tech. I am pushing stage two on the PSSs and I have more traction. No errors or jumps. Checkout any 911 4, staggered..... Including the turbo which i owned also with EVO ecu upgrade.

They are 20s, so the setup is 245/35/20 F - 8.5J, 275/30/20 R - 9J. For 19s - Front: 245/40/19 F 19 Rear: 275/35/19 R. Those are factory setups. Also for those who think xDrive has issues with that setup, 2014 it is an N/C option to order the staggered setup.
