550i and run flat tires

I have a 2013 550i with the m package that came with dunlop run flats.
They are quiet and smooth riding. Anyone out there with other brand run flats care to comment on ride quality? What life can I expect? I do like driving winding roads!

Tires are the quietest when new.

I have had 2 sets of the Dunlops on two different cars. Both started to get noisy around 10k miles and replaced around 15k.

The Bridgestone run flats I had on my
6 series faired much better.

Great car! Titanium Silver is my favorite color!
I have the same tires and so far no issues here either. However, I do know what pilot sport non run flats feel like and those are much better

My 550 has Dunlops. I have 16,000 miles on the car and they are still quiet. I have not checked the thread depth in a while, but I'm quite sure I'll get over 20,000 miles on them. I'll have to check the tread again to see if they look like they will go much beyond that.

WOW! I hate run-flats. I have them on my new 13 550 M-Sport also. Waiting for the Michelin PSS to show up. Putting on the 312 20s", will be smoother and much more quiet. The bangs with the run-flats are driving me insane and I only have 2000 miles!!!

I have the M-Sport with Dunlops. They seem pretty quiet, and I've nothing to compare them to on the 550i. However, I switched my wife's X5 from Dunlop RFTs this past week to Michelins.... can't believe how much more quiet and calm the ride is. It's like a different car. Will probably switch to non-RFTs when it's my turn.

Interesting. I didn't know you could switch from a run flat to a non run flat on a BMW.

Which Michelins did you put on the X5 and which are you going to put on your 550i?

I Have the RFT on my 11' X5 M-sport, (Bridgestone) and I have been through 5 tires, not from wear, bubbles. They drive me nuts on xpress way, very loud. Harsh ride. Changing to Non RF on the 13' 550 when I take delivery in May.

I don't drive F10, but every BMW model has owners who simply couldn't take run flat tires anymore. To your questions:

- You cannot order a BMW with non run flat tires, unless you order an ///M
- BMW dealership will not put non run flat tires on your car unless you are closest family member or they have a picture of you having sex with somebody who is not your wife. OK, let's just say BMW dealership will refuse to put non run flat tires on your car in 99.99% of the cases

You can get them at tire store of your choice. All non run-flat tires can be mounted on rims that had run flats on. Opposite might not be true.

I have portable compressor with goo and I have donut spare for when I go farther away from the area where I live.

I'm very happy with current tires and don't have intention to drive on run flat tires on any car any time soon. Let's say I will buy run flat tires and put them on my car when they (tire manufacturers) learn how to make them. Til then ... Michelin PSS' put smile on my face every mile I drive. No, I don't work for Michelin.

The wear on the X5 was one of the reasons I switched to non-runflats... my wife was getting 12k miles... average, but was getting enough tires replaced through warranty that I had realized how bad it was. Finally all 4 tires needed replacement and I pulled the trigger on the non-runflats.

The BMW deals will NOT sell you a new or CPO used car without runflats.... But they are well aware of the issues and will happily put on non-run flats as long as you ship them right to the dealership. Since they had to replace all 4 wheels on my 2010 750iL Individual because they were bent from the run-flat, I had tire rack ship PZEROs and they them on.

I also have a Continental Comfort Kit Tire Inflator Kit which I keep in that small compartment under the trunk.

I am putting BMW 312 20" on next week with Michelin PSS. I did need to order the BMW TPMS but that is all they require you to do.

Pilot Sport Plus A/S are quite loud compared w/ the two different runflats I've had on my 5-series.

Were they run-flat A/S, I ran the non-flat on 20s and that was the smoothest over PZERO, S04s, all non-run flat. I never drove a run-flat that did not drive like on was on bricks.

Me: Non-run flat, Michelin Pilot Sport Plus A/S.

Run flats (or zero-pressure or run-on-flat or whatever) are actually quieter on the F10. Just my experience.

550i and run flat tires

Anybody who says their Dunlop run flats are still quiet after 15k miles need to have their ears checked.

Any performance tire with 15k miles (50% or more tread wear) will be be much noisier especially a run flat performance tire.

I would argue those that think the tires are quiet after 15k miles simply got used to the noise.

After 7 different BMWs over the last 15 years, all of my tires got noisy. I doubt I am a special case.

550i and run flat tires

Take the run flats off!! Put on a set of Bridgestone potenza non run flats and you will see what a smooth and quiet ride really is!!!! I had the same Dunlop tires on mine and I just swapped them out and what a difference.

Yea, I never had the tires long enough to notice the wear. Terrible. How's the X feel now, big difference? And what about the warranty now that you switched?

To the OP: your car is stunning! My experience with Dunlop run flats wasn't so good...other run flats I've had by Bridgestone, Goodyear, and Pirelli were fantastic. I had the Dunlops on SC430s that I owned and switched them for Michelin Pilots...what a difference! Even the Lexus salesman who sold me the car was impressed and even began telling his other customers to switch to the Pilots. However, since that experience was over 10 years ago, I wouldn't be surprised if Dunlop has upped their game as far as their run flats are concerned. Good luck with yours and, again, great car you got there!

Absolutely true. When I first drove my 2013 528xi on the Continental RFTs (after doing some 6000 kms on Dunlop winter RFTs, which are rated very quiet at 68 dB), I was mad at how loud they were, spoiling this luxury feeling and smoothness of the F10. However, after having put another 5,000 kms on them, I sort of stopped paying attention to the noise. Anyway - I'm not going to ditch them before they are worn down enough to justify replacement (at which time I'll have a difficult decision to make: go with non-RFTs and a hassle of doughnut spare, or pick the quietest RFTs one can find)...

PS. I realize no RFTs will ride as smoothly as a set of conventional performance tires (even though on the label, I have seen RFTs rated with lower noise than some conventional tires) - but I drive a lot, so decided it would be a real waste to not wait untill my OEM tires are worn. I only hope this "saving" will not cost me a bent rim or two!

I love the Michelin Primacy Run Flats, they are better than non run flats. I think run flats and bmw suspension are in tune now, a big difference from when I had my first set of run flats on a 2004 E60 545i, it had dunlops and after 9,000 miles thet were so noisy I had to replace them.

But today, my 2011 550i with the Michelins, love it! I believe BMW has tuned the suspension for run flats and I love them, no way I go to non run flats.
