Just completed the successful update of my nav based on everything that Shawn has provided. Just to help those a little reticent,

Shawn provided the links to download programs necessary to update the system. There is a password he provides which is required to convert the downloaded files to what can be uploaded to the car. He also provided the contact to obtain the necessary FSC code. The FSC costs $50 and is paid for via PayPal.

I used a Mac and used the process described by Bikie at #445 at this link:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...&postcount=445
Just a note that at step 3, the downloaded RAR files are converted into a different set of files. When the top root is double clicked, it creates a disk with two things - a filed called "config.nfm" and a folder called "pkgdb". These two are dragged to to 32gb usb.

The usb is plugged into the glove box usb port. When I turned the ignition on, the usb was not recognized immediately. I had to go the the navigation menu and press the "option" button on the i-Drive where there was a menu item to load the new maps.

After they began loading, it took 50 minutes to complete. There is a progress bar showing the percent of upload. After the upload was complete, there is prompt to restart the system and the new maps were there. The new version is 2012-1A.

Really works like a charm.

Thanks Shawn for the help and this whole awesome process.

Thought the nav update went off without a hitch for me as well. Was nice for my house (which is older than my car) to show up in the system for a change.

Am a bit concerned about something, though. Just this morning my car told me it's past due for a service which should have been performed in January 2000. This isn't my first problem similar to this -- started getting a message about the battery needing to be changed followed by errors about recommended services which had been performed a few weeks ago. I'm just a bit nervous about taking it back since this happened so soon after applying the nav update. Any concerns about taking a car under warranty back after making this upgrade?

Whatever may be happening with your car, has nothing to do with the Map Update you did. The Map Data used and the the process you followed is BMW's, and the Update Code you used is the same exact FSC Code your dealer would have provided you if you purchased it though him. Thus your update is 100% OEM.

Take the car in if needed, but do not worry about the Map Update, which is without a doubt unrelated, nor a concern for your dealer.
