CPS question S52

Hi all.

I recently picked up a 1998 M3/4/5 and while attending to some much needed motor work I noticed that the Crank shaft position sensor seems to be non existant? am I nuts or is this normal? All my other BMWs with M50/52/52tu all had one, this has the spot for one, and its empty. However I dont see a plug for it, and the car runs..

That would be odd, huh? The DME needs the CPS signal to run. As 7pilot stated, it is on the block near the flywheel, which is towards the rear of the engine, where it interacts with the transmission. The M50 had it up front where it was easier to get to. Now it's in a really cramped place.
