Water Pump/ Mystery Part

Hello everyone. I am in the process of replacing a few things on the old E30 (first time replacing the water pump on a bmw). I removed the old water pump and after doing so this pin and spring fell out. I really have no idea where it came out of. I didn't see it, just heard the ping on the ground. I poked around for a while trying to see a logical place where it would fit, but I am unsure. I have moved on to other areas for now until I can figure it out or someone is cool enough to identify it for me.

Thanks they are a big help. I have decided the ignition rotor and distributor cap should be changed. So this gives me some time to read up on this. From what I gather I need to loosen the tension pulley and re-adjust first, or can I put the spring and guide back on without re-adjusting since all did was remove the water pump?

Since running into this I have looked into weather or not I should replace my timing belt. It was last replace 8/29/2011 with 160,888 reading on the OD. The OD is now reading 184,000. So I should be safe for a year and another 20k or so.

I'd follow the re-tensioning procedure rather than just popping it back in there.

And yes on the belt, you should be fine for a while.
