E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

Hey there,

I'm new to the E30 game. Just recently picked up mine (87 E30 325) Sunday and already have had to put quite a bit of time into it. The check engine light is on, however, I was able to get it to turn off... But it turned back on yesterday...

Well the valves I do know need to be adjusted really bad, but before I dive into that, I wanted to see about rebuilding it. The tack says 132xxx, but clearly has stopped working a long time ago... Which I definitely should have payed attention too when I bought it... But I loved the car so much I just had to have it. I know these motors a basically indestructible but for my safety I'm just gonna go ahead and go through it myself so I can basically start over. I will be doing it at home, and have all the tools need to do so.

I'm looking into ordering the gasket sets off of Bavarian Auto Sports. The head of course and the bottom end. Is there anything besides the gasket sets I should get as well? My clutch seems fine, I do need new bushings though, and I need a windshield wiper motor.

Now say, while I have this engine torn apart I wanted to build the block... What are some upgrades I can do to give my engine more power?

I know boost is an option, but I'm not looking to spend that money just yet, maybe in July. This will be my daily so I don't want to go tooooooo crazy. Just want to stay all motor.

You didn't say if you had an e or i model soo I'm going to assume e. Here is a common build that I read into before purchasing the car I have. Using best of both worlds, parts from both e and i models http://www.strictlyeta.net/technical/328i_1.html goes through the whole process. bottom end 2.7L e motor with top end of a 2.5 i

I say pick up another M20 long block and build that. They are cheap. Then you can just ride your current motor until the other is ready. Simply intake header and exhaust will keep you somewhat happy for a little while.

the 2.7 stroker is a reletively lower compression engine, thats why its good for boosting. if you want to stick N/A, butt to pick up a B25 (i) block, and fit an M52B28 crank into that and a few other bits, giving you a 2.8 Stroker but higher compression than the 2.7 stroker as well. i have been in one, and they are much quicker than the 2.7 conversion, in fact not much point going the 2.7 route at all unless you are going boost

Okay I'll look into the M20 engine, I found quite a few in my State.
Timing belt, water pump and thermostat have been changed already and look fairly new. How many miles should I go before changing it again?

Age is as much a factor in the belt change frequency as mileage. 4 years or 50k. IF you can confirm the belt was changed very recently, you can go 2-3 years on it. Otherwise, just change the darn thing now and KNOW how much mileage it has on it. It's cheap, and easy to change.

You are rebuilding a motor without being sure it needs a rebuild
Would a tune-up not suffice at first, since it is a daily.....
