M-sport BMW roof rack - worst clamp ever ?

I just installed...tried to install the OEM BMW roof rack for the M-Sport roof rails.

I cannot believe how crappy the clamp/attach system is.

When you tighten the hex screw to close the clamp on the rails, the whole clamp itself move clockwise and unless you sit on the rack at the same time to lower the assembly, the clamp just pop out...

Am I retarded ? or the OEM BMW roof rail are garbage ? too bad because the construction of the rest of the rack is absolutly great. But the locking mechanism is attrocious !

BMW even provide a nice torque wrench to torque the bolt exactly how it should be.

You have to be doing something wrong, its the exact same type of rail on my wife's mini, and I had no problems installing the cross bars.

argh.. I will try it again tomorrow... but I did work on it for a good hour today. the rack is on the car, but I was not very happy with the fact that it did not feel right.

May be my rack is defective or something.

I was expecting the clamp to have some kind of L shape in order to grip nicely to the rood rail groove, but it feels more like the clamp is V shaped. I'll take better pictures tomorrow of the clamp itself.

Still it should not be that hard !

I replaced the front grill for the black ones.. that took me a whole 10 seconds per grills easier to swap body parts than install the rood rack !

ok, so today I removed the clamp and i see what might have gone wrong.

one of the clamp has a bad plastic coating... with exposed metal... result -> scratched roof rails !

I have removed both of them and realized only that particular clamp was twisted really. I think the plastic coating must have been wrong all along.

I will return the rails and see if I can have BMW NA do something for me... They are tiny scratches but for an OEM accessory the quality control could have been better.

So my conclusion, do not buy the OEM racks for the M-Sport rail.
The item # I bought was BMW 82-71-0-405-052

I checked the sticker and they were the BMW 'IND' (for individual low profile rails). So it is not that the product was not designed for my car, but just poor quality control on that one clamp.

to make it worst I had the roof rack switch from left to right to see if it worked better so I have the scratches on both roof rails

PS: i wonder if rails are aluminum or painted as some of the scratch are really black. Either clamp coating material or rail are just coated aluminum color ..?

I wonder if the aftermarket part are a little smarter

So dumb to have the clamp edge so sharp when the roof rail grooves are 1/4 inch wide

I don't get that design at all

I've thought about getting the OEM BMW crossbars but the more I look at it the more it looks cheap and built like crap.. I'm still searching for a quality aftermarket bars.

^^ There is nothing wrong with the OE cross bars. They are not cheaply made. I have run them on my X5 for 2 1/2 years now, and they are also on my wife's mini. They do get a bit noisy over 120 km/hr, but in terms of fit, they fit properly.

I have a feeling that its end user error in this case

I really try to take my time setting these up, and not over torque them. What do you think could have gone wrong ?

Since first install the clamp keep on slipping up, as if they were not perpendicular enough. It felt like the clamp were at 45 degree angle while they should have been 90 degree piece getting in there.

the screw itself is at 45 degree so it can provide pressure vertically as well as horizontally. so I understand the location of the pressure screw.

The clamp itself though I don't get the angle it enter the groove. Look at the picture attached, the clamp really barely stick 2mm into the roof rail groove at most.

The build of the overall rack is perfect, great quality build no doubt.. But if I can't install it and I have installed all kind of things on many cars I owned, that is not a good sign of usability...

I would love to see pictures of how the other brands (thule, yakima...) clamps look like. as you can see on the bmw rack, the clamp barely protrude outside of the rack, very weak if you ask me.

found couple pics from thule rack.... humm looks like the rack need to have specific left and right anchor... I saw on the bmw one there was a sticker... but I wonder if I understood it correctly

I take the image above as if the arrow is where the sticker should be. The sticker being located on one of the extremity of the rack bar.

I was about to order these for my X5 but now I'm having second thoughts.

Any resolution on your issue? Did you figure out a way to get the BMW ones installed? Did you try another solution?

M-sport BMW roof rack - worst clamp ever ?

Same here. Curious if this got better. Other than the scratches of course. Thanks for updating us.

I always use Thule. It will be always much better to OEM BMW (easier to install, quieter, probably cheaper, etc.)

I will say it again.. OEM BMW bars are crap and cheaply made. BMW should stamp a BMW markings and approve a Crossbar Philooo is using as OEM accessory

Roger that. Did it come with the bars too? From what I could see it is just the four mount points. Did you get the aeroblade bars? If so what size. Thanks.

I ordered the Rhino Rack from Autoanything. Looks to be as good and a bit cheaper than Thule. Will only be mounted when we use the Thule torpedo on road trips. Frankly may be never as we typically drive my truck.

I ended up going with the Thule 460R and the installation is solid. My major gripe is that when using a roof box, the rubber inserts come out on the sides of the rack after a few hundred miles of highway driving. They are easy to put back in but it's still annoying. There is also some noticeable whistle noise with the rack alone, which I was not expecting to be so noticeable.
