Anybody actually USE the voice control?

Had my F30 for a few months now -- I see that little talkie-person button on the steering wheel and realize I haven't bothered to learn any of the commands.

Flipping through the manual I'm not sure how much more efficient the voice control would be than just using buttons. Has anybody fallen in love with any specific commands that are super convenient, or just generally think that voice control is superior to tactile control?

If so, I'm really interested to hear your point of view. I guess I'd like to give myself a reason to devote more time to it if there are success stories.

Coming from an E90, the only ones I know are...

"Home Address"..."Start Destination"
"Stop Guidance"

I found it clunky and error prone to the point I don't use it. It is a big weakness in my opinion.

I use it to dial Bluetooth for my most common calls. It works well, but background noise is an issue, so you need to have the windows and sunroof closed.

Which is why I use Siri which works incredibly well and is already 90% integrated in the car.

Just press + hold the Home button and Siri is heard over the audio system. Say "Text my wife I'll be home by seven" and a text is written. Say "Are the Yankees playing tonight" and hear the schedule.

When done, hit the voice button on the steering wheel to disengage. It's awesome.

I use it to call contacts and enter new destinations. My experience have been generally positive with the voice recognition (although perhaps I've trained myself to talk to it in the same way I'd talk to someone who isn't a native English speaker and is slightly hard of hearing).

I use it all the time. I use it to call from my phonebook, to switch off navigation when I get to familiar areas, turn on and off the split screen, bring up radio presets, and perform music search on the built-in hard disk. It works about 99% of the time.

All the time. From Entering a destination in on the Nav, to making a phone call.

Hahahaha!!! Krash, I stopped talking to my car when the 2007 GS350 I had kept confusing my commands. If I said "I am hungry", it was supposed to show all the restaurants in the area selected with a country flag indicating the type of cuisine. It worked for the salesman. However, whenever I said "I am hungry" the answer would be something like "turning the wipers on" or setting the interior temperature to 65 degrees".

Man, talking about an infuriating experience!!! Now you know why I stopped talking to my cars...blood pressure problems

No, not yet. Siri integration is coming, protocol is called Eyes Free, but its mostly around having the phone read detail to you so you don't have to fumble for the iPhone.

While it would be nice to use natural voice to say "take me to Main Street" like you can in Apple maps or Google maps, the data isn't passed on to iDrive in that manner. However, you can use Siri to send email, read and reply to text, get sports scores, weather updates, stock quotes, movie times, contacts, dial phone numbers, add a calendar event, start a Playlist, and dozens of other features and its all available right now.

As a phone interface, it's so far behind my 2010 Audi that I don't even use it any more. (As BJ said, it's faster to talk to my phone.) How bad is it compared to the Audi? This bad:

Phone: hold button, say "Call Firstname Lastname as work."
Audi: press button, say "Call Firstname Lastname at work."
BMW: press button, say "phone book", wait for prompt, say "Firstname Lastname", wait for prompt, say "yes", wait for prompt, say "1", wait for prompt, say "yes".

I'd be glad to be wrong in this case, so please correct me if there's an easier way to interact with the car (other than the aforementioned using my phone).

That's not something that can happen easily nor is it destined for us, unfortunately.

That's Apple saying "Hey car companies, don't pay NAVTEQ millions of dollars to license their maps, pay Apple and license ours instead."

Well, if there is any integration in our future with cars and tablets, I feel Apple will be the company to do it. Also, from personal use, if or when this happens, one thing Apple is good at, making things easy to use. Nothing against Samsung and the others...love them all, Just that Apple products from the start makes them feel like a comfy environment.

Anybody actually USE the voice control?

Use it all the time in my 650 with old style iDrive and almost no buttons for anything. It's the only thing that makes early iDrive and slow navigation input bearable.

I use it for Navigation purposes. Works flawlessly. "Navigation . . . Enter Address . . . [Address Provided] . . . Start Guidance." Voila.

Ouch. I'm giving up my TSX which works the same way:
Me: Call "Home."
Car: Would you like to call "Home?"
Me: Yes
Car: Calling.

If this is true it's a shame BMW can't come up with something easier. That's just dumb.
