E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

What is it?

This is kind of vague but now that I am in the presence of hard core BMW people, perhaps a question I have wondered about for many years can be answered. 1980's 3XX with 6cyl. A tag in engine compartment says Cabriolet. It has a partial folding top -- the portion of the top from just behind the back of the door. The doors have frames like a hard top. The front part of the roof is a fiberglass panel.

Sounds like a Baur. They're pretty rare.

Does it look like this?

That's it! Its even the same color. Too bad we don't have it anymore. By rare, does that include sought after? At any rate, thanks for the ID.

Sought after by collectors, yes. Dang few of them made. I have no idea what one's worth however.

not sure on how many there are in the USA, but plenty of them over here. not sure why anyone would buy one when you can get a convertible though.

My understanding is they were made because BMW didnt offer a prefacelift convertible E30 originally. the success of the Baur E30s which are an aftermarket conversion was what convinced BMW to finally make a real convertible from the factory from around late 1986 early 1987. in other words, if they werent popular, the E30 vert would never have been made!

so yes, sorry got sidetracked, but not really that valuble or rare unless, like all E30s, in good condition.

They must have all ended up in NZ, because there's darn few of them over here. I saw ONE of them at Bimmerfest East last year, and we had upwards of 1500 cars there from all over the US.

Baur was in SA & mostly built RHD cars
Baur purportedly had far better quality control. Which I believe, since the occupation of quality control is a Master ocupation in Germany
