Punch PX-12 highs have been my best experience when i was in the audio game. If you run any kind of amp to them they'll get as loud as your ears can handle.

do you have the HK system? What speakers are you needing to replace? Whats wrong with them?

If youve got the HK system, you will have a little work to do, as the speakers in the doors and i believe in the rear deck are 3 Ohm resistance, and most amps today are 4, so you would have to replace the amp.. if you replaced the amp you might as well just replace all the speakers... i am having exactly this problem, replacing a couple speakers really just wont do it.

Rockford Fosgate makes great amps and pretty good speakers, but in "speaker world" you really get what you pay for, so dont expect much from a cheap 100 dollar set.. Their Punch and Power series are very widely known.. Polk is also not bad either.. not to mention, check out crutchfield.com , you can type in what car you drive and they tell you pretty much everything you need to know

any other questions, just post!

if you are crazy rich, Google Focal, their speakers are nuts.

you will most likely have an amp if your car has the Harman Kardon logo on the tweeter speaker grille. However even if it doesnt you could still have an amp, or not..

to know for sure, remove the carpet covering the spare wheel for easier access, remove the trim peice to the left of the trunk (that black thing held in my two grommet like things), then there are a couple grommets holding the carpet on.

Take those off and you will (or will not) see a tiny little amp screwed into place behind those two storage compartments you have in the trunk if you dont have a cd player.. it shouldnt be hard to miss, its the thing with all the wires going to it.

If you want to keep the car original it will be a lot harder to do than just getting an aftermarket head unit, but it can be done, youll need a Line out converter in order to send RCAs to the amp from the headunit by tapping into some speaker wire. However, if you get a new amp you will have to buy speakers of the correct impedance (the 3 ohm OEM speakers most likely wont work) and install passive crossovers or for better quality install an active crossover (between the headunit and the amp) because i dont think the BMW headunit does the "crossing over", haha, i think the amp does.

and i agree with you, dont replace three, you might as well replace them all, but beware, look for a speaker on the shallower side for the doors because (in a coupe at least) there isnt a lot of room there.

Haha sorry for the long response, feel free to PM me with questions if you like!

The e46 wiki (link on this page above your first post) has a lengthy write-up on what your options are with Harmon Kardon system and probably good advice otherwise. Lots of good info in there otherwise too.
