Looks like a nice car but 12 year old BMW's typically need about 2k worth of TLC a year. It might have been somebody's baby and only driven in the summer. With any luck it's had extra maintenance which should make a better car to own as it ages.

Sorry to say this but Honda Civic is a safer bet from perspective of trouble free driving.

Take a look at the wiki for common trouble points:

I've done alot of research and know things like the water pump and coolling system overhaul. But comes with a warranty on water pump, transmission, and engine. Not bad for my price range. I've owned a jeep and are looking for greater challenges.

the E46 is a great car, awesome choice and this one looks clean. My main point is they are not Camry reliable.
I would have any out of warranty BMW inspected at an independent BMW shop before I bought it. I do it for my cars when they are about ready to come off warranty.

Nice car! I have 154k on mine and it still runs like the day I bought it in 2004. You will like it. Mine has been remarkably reliable for a sports car IMO.
FCABs twice
Lower Control arms
Rear Differential bushing
RTABs
Oil Pan Gasket
Engine mounts
OFHG
CVV
sway bar end links
Koni Strt Shocks and Struts
Camshaft Position sensors
Beisan O-ring mod for VANOS

That is about it....not too bad for nine years of driving.

Car runs great on Michelin's Pilot Super Sport (all-season if you cannot justify summer tires and a separate set of winter tires) With the low mileage on yours previous owner may have gargaged it in the winter....drive all year long here in FL.

Your prospect is the same as mine except I have Silver/Gray interior and yours is black...Enjoy!

My first BMW was a 2001 330i.

The only bad thing about this choice is that you won't want anything else than a BMW from now on and any bimmer with a less powerful engine will be a let down!

I'd go for the first one just on account of the miles and it does not look like a boy racer owned it before you. Really clean looking cars in pictures though. Regardless of which you go for, I would get it inspected by a BMW independent shop, especially the second car.

Another nice car, priced appropriately for the mileage. Personally, since I keep my cars basically forever (12+ years), I would go for the one with lower mileage (108k less) and pay a little more, and keep it forever - even if it ends up your second car some day with only liability insurance on it etc.

Really? That doesn't bode well for my plans of getting a cheap E46 325i wagon.

Link didn't take. But the answer to your previous question regarding the extra cost is yes. The blue one has all the flags for a boy-racer car: An 80k mile old transmission is not "new," and what the heck happened to the original one at 100k miles? BMWs also rarely need "axels" [sic] replaced; Drag racing much? Oh, "stage 2 clutch"; I get it now.

Per the previous posters, I spend about 2000 per year on maintenance . . . because it's cheaper than not doing it.

No mileage listed? Are you getting a PPI? Especially for the rear subframe failure, the repair of which would come out of your pocket since the recall is over?

Congrats. I jumped into Bimmerland last month with a 160,000-mile 330i ZHP. It's a fantastic car. I haven't enjoyed driving on four wheels this much since my '94 Mustang GT. Thorster nailed it--aside from maybe an upper-end Audi or a Porsche, I'm not sure there's anything else I'd consider owning at this point.

Just as a point of reference, seller is asking for about $500 over dealer price for "outstanding" condition (see Edmunds). KBB is probably less. A PPI might help you discover if there are any reasons the car is not "outstanding."

A bit surprising to see a Chicago car without heated seats or the full winter package, including headlamp washers. I also don't think any 3-series has "dual climate control;" Just one HVAC system for both front passengers. . .

Looks nice, though. Hope it turns out well for you.

That is out the door price which KBB does not calculate tax, title, and license.
