E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

E30 Manual Sunroof Handle Ideas!

So, my sunroof crank assembly blew up and I have to get a new one... eventually. It's almost summer, I have no A.C., and now my sunroof crank doesn't work. I'm not too worried about it but it would be nice to get it fixed.

Basically, I am on the fence about just saving up for a brand spankin' new fancy automatic motor along with an illuminated switch from pelican parts but, I also like the rustic feel of that classic pre-technological era before we got lazy and I also like the extra cash in my wallet.

So my two questions are...

1.) Have you done anything cool to with your handle or do you know anybody that has done something cool with there handle? (Pictures are always welcome!)

2.) Should I just get with the times and go electric?

Mine is also a crank roof. I like it better! Less stuff to go wrong. Electrical stuff is nice and convenient but when stuff goes wrong it can be a headache! Granted most window and sunroof circuits are of simple design however BMW engineers made things more complicated then they needed to be.

My car has manual windows and sunroof.

Ive been told converting to electric is quite complicated, all the rails are different etc as well, have to drop headliner etc. not worth the hassle imo, but go ahead if you want to do it! And i may be wrong. Id say your biggest hassle will be getting power to the motor if your car doesnt have a check control, and if it doesnt, you will be wanting to put a panel in to cover the whole it will go, as you will have to run the electric roof visor/headliner cap

When I swapped mine over it wasn't to bad I got the motor out the junkyard along with the headliner that replaces the crank with the switch once i take out the crank there was abrass part that the crank mounted to I had to cut to make the motor fit an had to drill a hole for a screw but it wasn't that bad an the power wire plugged right in down by the firewall witch was nice but all worked out for me just make sure you open the sunroof an set the motor to the open or when you try an close it it won't close or open right but I am vary happy with the way it turned out
