x5 electrical problems with radio, air, and other items

I got into my x5 today to just run down to the post office. When I got in I noticed that it didn't make any noise when I turned the key. The x5 started, but my radio wouldn't turn on, no power at all. Also, my ac would not kick on. The blower does work. The turn signals would flash on the outside, but not on the dash. They also didn't make the click sound while they were flashing. I also noticed that the picture of the vehicle on the dash wouldn't light up. I opened all of the doors, but the indicator lights never came on. Also, the heated seats won't come on. Every other item seems to be working fine. I checked every fuse in both the glove box and the back. I even pulled every one of the fuses just to check. I removed the battery while pulling the fuses, just encase the computer needed to be reset. I drove it last night and had no issues. There was no rain in the area, just a clear night. It's now sat after 5, and the local dealers are closed. Anyone have an idea for me to check? Thanks.

Yes, I have a new battery. It was replaced about 6 weeks ago. I did read on another forum that someone had the same problem and that a "circuit board" had to be replaced. It didn't go into any further details.

If the car starts (easily) and the battery is new, the problem is (probably) not the battery. I'm still a newbie with the X5 (had ours 6 months), but it sounds like you'll need the dealer to diagnose this problem.

Sometimes I have the same problem with my 02 X5, but its omly with the radio. I will get in the Radio will be working fine and then it will just cut out with no sound coming from the speakers. if i turn the Radio off and back on it will work for a while then cut off again. Sometimes it wont do it for weeks then all of a sudden it happens again. I have no Idea what the problem is.

Hi,
I have similar issues with a car I am looking to buy. Could you please tell me what the problem was? How much did you spend to fix it? And did it reoccur?
Please help thanks

I had to replace the battery. I had heard from others. You have to leave the battery disconected for at least 30 minutes. The reconnect, turn the X5 on and turn the steering wheel to the wheel stops. All the wat to the right, then all the way to the left till the wheel stops both ways. This seems to help reset everything.

The computer just needed reset. I left the battery unplugged for a few hours while I was out running around. When I came back home, I connected the battery again. I have not had any of those issues in well over 2 years since then.

any results?heres my radio problem.i have an 02 X5, no nav, no dsp.when i first got the car, first 4 buttons didn't work.after time the radio would stop working on rainy days.if i was lucky it would turn on then turn off afterwards by itself.finally it wen't downhill completly and won't work all together.my primary thought is the MID needs to be switched out.i did check the fuse in the glove box and its okay.wiring harness seems fine however i didn't test it with a multimeter.on occasion, when i rip the radio out 2 lights by the telephone button would light up for a split second.thats it.i think the business CD is fine considering i can still get cd's in and out of it(kinda pointless now).any idea what the problem is?i didn't disconnect the battery yet, could that possibly help?

Check for water on your fuse box in the rear of the car. I have a mystery leak in the rear and water has been leaking on the computer and the fuses. Opened the panels and about 6 inches of water in each wheel well.

Similar weird problem with my 2005 4.4 yesterday. After some rain the car would not start, jumped it and started no problem but a few electrical clues, car was reving between 1.5 and 2rpm and having a difficult time, also 1. gas showed empty - it was not, 2. 4x4 light on - no reason, 3. -39degrees F - summer in washington dc - not possible, 4. AC was not blowing cold. Turned car off and it started no problem, car idled perfectly and 4x4 light turned off. Added a few gallons of gas and the gas tank was back to normal - full. 30 minutes later the temperature slowly started increasing and the AC started blowing cold when the car reached 23F. This morning it is fine.

Last Thursday I did have some work at BMW, a new Driver door carrier for the handle and Driver door window regulator - dealer did a horrible job. My question - could there be water in the driver door shorting something? What is the best way to check? This was our first rain since the work on the car. Thanks

My issues have returned, and the earlier fix of disconnectiong the battery no longer works. I just need to get this fix so I can trade it in. Any ideas on an easy / cheap fix?

Since a new battery back in 2007 fixed the problem then...could it be that you need another new battery now that its 5 years later? You didn't say what name brand or battery class size you purchased back in 2007...but car batteries usually last between 4-10 years...depending on usage and climate. A battery that has been deeply discharged can die prematurely...even if recharged and brought back "to life"...the battery can have "concealed" damage when allowed to discharge.

What is your current battery's voltage? Do you have a multimeter to test it? If not, have you unlocked your OBC so that you can run TEST 9? TEST 9 will give you the battery's voltage when the ignition is in position 1 or 2...and you can get the charging system's voltage (alternator etc) when the engine is running. Always check the battery's voltage after any surface charge has been removed...ie...don't check the battery right after shutting the engine down with out drawing off surface charge:

Since you've been around since 2007...I'd assume that you've seen the instructions on how to UNLOCK the OBC...but in case you haven't...here's a link to how to do it. This link has instructions (and explanation of each of the 21 TESTs) for both types of instrument clusters used in the X5. If you have the 20 digit alpha/numeric display...then you have the HIGH instrument cluster. If you have the "graphic display" (icon of vehicle)...then you have the LOW instrument cluster.
Again, BOTH instructions are at this link: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/313409...series/page-6/
Good luck.

Qsilver, Thanks for the info about unlocking the OBC. Test 14 is the fault memory which has two error codes listed. Do you know where I could find the meanings of the following 2 codes?
1- BE 48 040
2- C7 81 000
3- 00 00 000
4- 00 00 000
5- 00 00 000

Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

I have never seen an index or breakdown of these codes (not to say that there's a list somewhere or that a forum member that has BMW access can't respond).

Remember that the UNLOCKED OBC tests were not intended for public view...and their purpose is to display the inputs/outputs/functions of the IKE (instrument cluster) and OBC (onBoard CPU)...and don't represent engine or emission or other system's operational faults.

As stated in the info that was posted for TEST 14...it represents a hexidecimal code that was stored as a fault to the operations of the IKE/OBC.

E53 radio not working

Hi people,
New to this so bare with me, don't if I'm being daft here but the radio stopped working this morning wouldn't switch on and getting no sound now to the sat nav. Is this something I can sort myself or does it need to go to a dealer. I've not done anything yet just thought I would around before going straight to a dealer
