No tours at PCD

Just heard the BMW plant in SC is shutting down. No plant tours after April 29th. No plans to reopen until summer of 2014!

Remodeling plant to build X1...or so they say.

Very bummed. Is picking up in SC still worth it?

I can confirm that this is true. The confirmation letter from PCD for my pickup stated the same thing.

I don't really think this is a big deal though - the plant tour was on the bottom of the things I cared about with PCD. I care about the driving school a lot more than a tour of a working factory. I also care about the delivery presentation from a specialist more than the tour. And the Zentrum Museum is still open. Bottom line - I'm a bit bummed that the factory will not be in production, but it really is not that big of a deal for me.

Thanks for info. I've done a couple of BMW driving schools, in Colorado, on snow and ice, and they were a blast. Didn't know about the Zentrum Museum.

The factory tour is the highlight of the delivery process imo
There really isn't a 'driving school', just some laps here and there and then 'the hot lap' that the instructor takes you out on.

Now that I have completed the PCD pickup and driven back home, I wanted to update this thread with my impressions since there is no factory tour.

First, the Zentrum Museum, in my opinion, is kind of lame. It's there, and there are some neat historical cars, but not really that cool. So, don't expect to get much out of the museum. The rest of the delivery experience, however, was awesome. I am definitely glad I did the experience - well worth the cost of the flight down there.

Yes, the "driving school" is not very long. There are four components: breaking, slalom, wet track in a circle and hot lap in the M as a passenger. They were very short - the whole thing only lasted about 1.5 hours, but I had a wonderful time. There was lots of laughing and giddiness from all participants. If you have done previous driving schools, you may find them a waste of time, but I had a blast.

The car delivery itself was awesome. I spent approximately an hour and 45 minutes with the specialist and he knew everything. Very personal. Very informative. My brother was with me for the experience and he said he learned things about his car that he didn't know and he has been driving it for 2 years.

The last piece is a relatively short "off-road" (really a prepped course) driving experience with an X-5. It was cool, but not nearly as fun as the "driving school" part.

I do wish the factory was open and am a bit bummed that it wasn't. There is a voucher to go once it reopens, but I probably won't spend the money to fly back down there just for a factory tour. Still, I do not regret doing PCD even with the factory closed and would gladly spend the time and money to do it again.

My wife loves the X1 so much she wanted to trade in her 128i for another X1. I've convinced her to wait for the X4 and we will do the PCD.

No tours at PCD

They're building the new X4 there, and there's a redesign of the X5 that they're building as well. I got to go on one of the last tours through the X3 plant before they switched production lines up.
