1998 E39 540i Stalling

I have read and searched for possible problems and come up with nothing. My 540i that i have just purchased is stalling when i start it up. It is doing this about 50% of the time. When its going to stall nothing can stop it even if i try to keep the revs high it will still stall. After it stalls it may stall the next few times i try to start it but it will never take more than 5 times before it starts. General driving is fine although it has stalled twice while driving when i have been slowing down at low revs. I have cleaned the MAF using CRC MAF Cleaner. And i have cleaned the seized ICV using TB Cleaner. This has not made the stalling stop although it has made the car run smoother. What do I do next ? Thanks In Advance!

Does the ICV rattle when you shake it? Sometimes cleaning doesn't help, and the valve must be replaced.

Read for pending codes, and report back.

No, the best it can do is point you in the right direction. You still need skill in interpreting the data, based on knowledge of the workings of the car.

There may be a post or two that says, "When I got this code, I replaced the frammis, and the problem went away. Unfortunately, many who solved their problem never bother to report back to us, even though they received help from this forum.

Fuel filter is a very easy change. Look up the DIY FAQs and as an added bonus, our prevanos fuel filters are very cheap!

1998 E39 540i Stalling

I believe it has two Cam Position Sensors (CPS) like my 2001 540. There is one for each bank, i.e. each side of the engine. I would start by replacing whichever one threw the code. Bank 1 is passengers's side and Bank 2 is driver's side. Look in the Best Links for a DIY. If it is like my car, the driver's side is easier than the passenger's. but, either side is very easy to do.

Also, I write down my codes before clearing them so I know what needs to be fixed. That will help you as you diagnose the problem. After you replace the CPS on your car, rescan it.

Pre-Vanos M62s only have one CPS.

Most likely yes. If it is before build date 9/98 (IIRC) then it is pre vanos.
