3M Crystalline Window Tint Film and HUD

I am awaiting delivery of my MY15 650xi GC and am thinking of tinting the windows with 3M crystalline film to help protect the interior and reduce the heating in the summer. I'm thinking 90% on the front windshield and 70% everywhere else (including possibly the sun roof). My question is whether anyone has experience with this type of film and knows whether or not it impacts the viewability of the HUD. Also, if anyone has done something similar and has pics I would love to see them. Thanks!

Crystalline tint was the first thing I did when my 2013 650i arrived in October 2012.

This is the second car I've owned that I have went with the 3M Crystalline. There isn't another tint available that is better on keeping the heat out. I went with the 70% on the windshield and 40% all around. Here's a pic or two.

Does 3M crystalline become brittle over time?

What do you think of SunTech IR reduction films?

The 3M Crystalline is the #1 rated tint. I installed this tint on my other car 4 years ago and it's as good as new, no cracking or bubbling. This tint keeps the interior temps down significantly, just doesn't darkin the cabin like the other tints.

At 40% is the interior quite obvious? Much difference between 40 and 50%?

Any nighttime halo effects from the front window tint? I was discouraged from tinting my windscreen by the shop owner although my windscreen is the biggest piece of glass. Maybe because I'm in CA?

I went and did 70% on the front windshield and 50% everywhere else and am glad I did. The HUD is still completely readable in both the day and night and the car does not get nearly as warm when left out in the summer sun.

I'm getting 3m Crystalline 90 on the windshield and not sure about the side and rear. The local shop that does all the high end cars only carries 90 and 70 in the 3m Crystalline tint. I'm not sure the 70 will be dark enough. Did you do any clear bra? I did on my wife's car, headlights, front, mirrors, door handle pockets, and rear bumper top (under the trunk lid only) and like it after 18 months.

Thanks PackerFan for the compliment.

Went with the Ala Carte Individual Opal Merino and very happy with the finish, feel and smell. Not too many M Sports with Individual Leather tooling around.

I ended-up putting 70% on my front windshield because my installer told me that 3M recalled the 90% film due to issues with the glue. I can't tell you if 70% will be dark enough for the effect you desire. However, I can tell you the 70% on the front windshield is just about invisible if you didn't know it was there. As far as the clear bra, I did a lot of research and ended-up going with the Xpel Ultimate for two reasons. First, it self-heals up to "moderate" scratches. Secondly, the 3M film had an orange peel texture to it as well as a slightly yellow tint. The Xpel film didn't have any of the texture and was clear. In the end, I had the whole car covered for $3500. I'm not generally that anal about cars but I knew I would get pissed if the car got scratched because someone dragged something against the paint and I could have protected it for not too much money relative to the cost of the car.

Thanks for the input. I have an appointment tomorrow at the shop I used on my wife's car. The 3M clear bra on her car is smooth, it hasn't yellowed on the headlights/fog lights, I can't tell on the paint, since her car is Sapphire Black but it looks good. I like the idea of doing the entire car. What is the process to remove the film?

Does the film prevent the clear plastic head-lamps from yellowing?

Do you guys own or lease your cars?

I was told thatr removing the XPEL film is as simple as pulling it off and then using a water-thinned alcohol solution to remove any residual glue and will not harm the paint. Basiclly it is the opporite of putting it on.

The film does prevent the headlamps from yellowing. And yes, I do own the car.
