Mineral Gray over Coral Red. I know, pics or didn't happen, but it was dark when I got home after picking the car up last night, and it's raining today.

I thought I would make some early observations while they are fresh in my mind. I've only driven about 45 miles so far, so keep that in mind! I make these observations after having just traded an E90 335d (base suspension) and with my wife's car being a 2012 X3 35i with Sport Activity package and standard suspension. Besides the info in the title and my sig, you might want to know the X1 is pretty much loaded missing only 19" wheels and no Servotronic. Also I have the Pirelli staggered HP tires (not AS) and paddle shifters. All 3 cars have iDrive.

First, the thing I was most worried about-- tip-in delay. I've been really on the lookout for this, and I'm not seeing it. So far, tip-in really seems fine, and is far better than the X3, which as I have posted before, sometimes drives me nuts. This is not to say all is perfect, as I have noted a little transmission indecision coasting up to a light and then accelerating before a full stop. But tip-in, so far, is fine, and I think throttle response is pleasantly linear. I hope it stays that way as it adapts.

Second, steering feel without Servotronic. Well, the MSport steering wheel is lovely (still wish it came heated though.) Keeping in mind the fact that my E90 had all seasons and a standard steering wheel, I prefer the steering on the X1 to the E90, and it is miles ahead of the X3 (which I always set to S mode, but feels dead as a door nail to me). Yes, at parking lot speed it is quite firm, (not sure if more so than the E90, but at any rate not that different), but I think it feels great. I haven't driven Servotronic but I'm happy the way this feels. The weight is pleasant, not too much, as far as I'm concerned.

Third, engine smoothness. Keeping in mind that my trade-in was a d, by comparison the 4 is smoother and quieter under normal conditions. People who say it sounds like a diesel weren't driving a diesel daily before tyring it. Naturally, I have driven gently so far so I don't know how it sounds/feels at higher RPM, but it's fine with gentle driving and the car feels quite peppy, (meaning, giving it a little gas gets a good response, and not a lot of noise).

Fourth, sport seats. Really comfortable, and not as confining as the X3's (whose bolsters I can't seem to quite get wide enough to suite me, even though I'm not that big).

Fifth, interior quality. I love the color combo I got (coral red with the dark crosshatch aluminum). Very spiffy IMHO. I would say the quality over all feels on a par with both the E90 and the X3. I can see what people mean when they say some of the plastics lower down are not the best, but they're not where you normally look or touch, and I think the touch points are all great. I prefer the look and feel of this interior to my all black E90 or the tan X3.

Sixth, tech. Well, here I'm a little disappointed. I knew that this was E-series tech rather than F-series, but it's virtually identical in every respect to my 3-year older E90, and it feels weird to be missing features which are present on the two-model-year older X3. It's not a big deal, but surprisingly (to me), it doesn't even have the automatic shift from day to night mode on the screen. The one thing the E tech has that the F doesn't is the mirror compass, which I like having.

Seventh, brakes. I really like the brake feel. Much firmer than my 335d (which was, for some reason, much lighter than my previous non LCI E90, too light in fact), and also a little firmer than the X3.

Over all feel: really good. If I didn't know better, I would say it drives better than the equally-heavy d, which had standard suspension and AS tires. Maybe it is better. I will have to drive more. It does seem to have less tire thump than either the d or the X3 (whose rim/tires are ridiculously heavy, BTW).

Oh, one odd note which I haven't seen mentioned before. It doesn't have the BMW upper vent register heat control wheel. I've always appreciated that feature, and just assumed every BMW had it. We'll see how much I miss it.

Well, this is just some preliminary stuff. I will write more as I gain more impressions.

Great review of first impressions. Your's echo mine almost exactly as I came from a 2009 335i and our X1s seem almost identical down to colors (except mine is a 2013, Dec. build).

The transmission indecision/lag goes away in DS mode. The 8AT is awesome IMO (really 7 gears in DS mode).

What do you mean by the BMW upper vent register heat control wheel?

Have you owned a BMW before? They all have had this ever since I can remember except for the X1 and 1 series.

I'm sure someone will post a pic for you.

One thing I forgot to mention: ASS was already set to remember the last chosen setting on delivery. I did not ask for the setting. Perhaps that is the new 2014 default setting.
