Alekshop rear camera problem

I purchased and had my dealer install the alekshop rear view camera in my 2012 X3 with idrive. Works fine except I have horizontal lines wavering across the image, much like what we used to get on older TVs. Dealer was at a loss as to what was causing it. alekshop has offered no fix. Says it sounds like a power issue. Can anyone help?

Sounds like you are getting some EMI, electromagnetic interference. Your dealer must have ran the wires near some high power components or magnets on speaker, etc. It can also be a weak signal from a bad connection. Ask the dealer to check for bad connection and EMI.

This would be my guess also - the wires are not well shielded and passing by something causing a bit of video interference - check where the wire is routed and what it is passing next to.

I'm considering getting this kit myself. Would you recommend it if the horizonal lines were fixed? Is the functionality of the iDrive pretty seemless and consistent. I guess what I'm wondering is, does it feel like third party or is it almost like factory.

I have a kit in my 335i that I added, not the alekshop kit, but I think they all work the same way. They feel pretty much like OEM, the few comments I have that are non factory like are the following.

1. The camera has lines on it like the factory one, but they will not move like they do factory when you turn the steering wheel - the factory one will curve the lines to show you where you should end up as you turn the wheel.
2. Most of the kits I have seen power off the backup lights, so when you put it in reverse, the nav switches to the camera and the camera turns on from the backup lights - the issue is that when you put it back in drive, the factory camera will stay on and idrive stays on the camera view for a little while (I think it is based on hitting 5 mph or something), so with the aftermarket camera, the idrive stays on the backup view, but the camera is off (looking at trying to add something to mine to keep the camera on longer after the reverse lights go out).
3. Most cars with backup cameras also have PDC, so you will see the PDC view to the right of your camera view, but it won't light up as you probably don't have PDC - no big deal.

I'm interested too and the price seems right.

I PM'd about installation instructions and was advised to hire someone to install it. I want to do the work myself as I generally don't trust anyone to do the job properly.

I wish I could read through the instructions to know if I want to order the kit.
