Premature leather wear...Not just BMW

dbs600 posted a little while back about premature leather (driver's seat) wear. I wanted to show this picture of my loaner I got today, when I turned my Phantom in for service. This is the driver's seat of a 2012 Bentley GT W12 (12 cyl.) coupe. Gorgeous car, appears to be in amazing condition...still smells and looks brand new. 5,000 miles on the odometer. Looks like BMW is not the only one with shoddy leather

Not good at all, but doesn't look like it'll affect the stitching. Mine, however, being amongst the perforations is very concerning; my seat may tear open in another two and half years(!), which shouldn't be the case on any $100k+ vehicle. Please ask your service advisor what he'd do if that was a customer's car and let us know...

I did ask him, when I noticed it before I drove away...he said that if it was my car, the driver's seat would either be replaced or professionally repaired by an authorised Bentley repair technician. It would be warranted under craftsmanship defect/warranty!

Wow only 5k miles, ouch

Wonder what caused that, perhaps the studs on jeans, metal on a belt entering/exiting the car??

What's wrong with my car and, to a lesser extent, this car is a material defect from the factory, where the piece of leather / portion of hide in question was not an ideal cut and is less durable from the rest of same used to cover the seat. Nevertheless, BMW should back their product, as Bentley would, as stated.

Otherwise, I don't accept what some have stated - to modify the way we get into or out of our cars. I'm average height and weight (6 feet, 180 pounds or so) and have been getting into and out of cars for some time, without this happening until now...

Thanks for keeping an eye out, Deutsch!

Still at dealer; no word yet.

Didn't try leatherique, but not sure what is can do, as leather's already cracked...

Lexus leather.... I don't know what they do with that, but it lasts forever. (Yes, I'm familiar with aniline vs. semi-a leather, but still the BMW's isn't really second rate either... there's just something with how Lexus preps it. Lasts until the end of time in my experience).

That said, if a 175k+ car can wear down after only 5k, I suspect it's only reasonable that so can ours. Belts, buttons, jeans, etc... all play a part in wear. But what happens in the back end is the difference... for 175k, you'll get a replacement... for 100k maybe not so much--though I think at this price point, you should.

Wow, shocked to see such wear on a $200k car which is basically brand new.

I wonder if it's heat related, I know in hotter climates it's usually recommended you do a two stage process on your leather seats often with leather conditioner and cleaner.

$175k?? Try $225k for this Bentley!! lol

Seriously, this should not happen on a $50k car, or hell a $35k car with leather, but when a car is $100k++, it is just a crime!!!

I had some very slight wearing on an X5 one time, and it only had about 8000 miles. Even some of our older Mercedes' models with close to 200k miles on the car....perfect leather or MB-tex

What makes does your dealer sell and what cars can you select from as loaners, Deutsch?

Also, have you found any forums for Rolls-Royce like this one for BMW, or there are few with little activity?

At the Porsche factory they say that the stuff they reject gets sent to Benz and BMW. Funnily not to Audi. Probably just a cheap shot.

You are right. Leather should last better or be at least covered under warranty.

That said, the better the leather, the more delicate it appears to be. I found that the standard MB leather held up better than the Napa in the 600 or Designo's and the bigger the bolsters, the more rub they endure during entry/exit.

I remember transporting a computer on the backseat and the corners left pressure marks on the seats that wouldn't go away until extensive leather treatment weeks later...

And at Goodwood, England Rolls-Royce ....We asked them what they do with all the hides that have even the tiniest, almost impossible to see blemishes......They smirked, and told us Bentley buys the leather from them! LOL

We do not always have a choice, but if multiple cars are available....we can choose from Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Maserati, Porsche, Audi or Jaguar. So far they always have put us in a Bentley or Rolls-Royce loaner. I asked them what if we need a loaner, but a Bentley or RR is not available, and they kindly told us that the "least" car we would ever be given would be a Cayenne, Panamera, Jaguar XJ or Audi A8. Fine with me!!!!

That's a lot better service. I took my car in for service last year, and I asked if I could take the Ferrari 360 spider, and they said no.
