7 Series - E65 / E66 (2002 - 2008)
Discussion of BMW's 4th generation E65/E66 7 Series flagship. The E65 generated much controversy, due to its radical styling and iDrive user difficulties. Nonetheless, the E65 broke records to become the best-selling 7-series iteration ever, especially after its 2005 facelift.

to check fault codes you will need a bmw specific scanner to find anything other than service engine soon diagnostic trouble codes. there is an obd2 port on the underside of your driver side dash panel. if i recall correctly it even has small letters on it that reads OBD2. if you need to check a service engine soon light you can use any generic obd2 scan tool to get the code numbers, but the description given by those will be extremely generic. auto zone, pep boys and advanced auto parts will all read check engine/service engine soon lights for free.
if you did not know most of what i said above already, good chance you wont be buying the bmw diagnostic hardware and software yourself and you will need a good bmw independent mechanic or a trip to the dealer to tell you what is wrong if it is another computer module other than the engine that you want to see the codes from.
good luck. you should be a bit more specific as to what exactly you are referring to as an fyi for the future; or atleast do some basic research

I could be wrong but cant you check fault history by accessing the "secret" service menu? Hold down the trip reset button and when you see the screen pop up with list keep hitting the trip button until you get to unlocking. Then the unlock code is the last 5 digits of vin added together. EX. on of my bmw's was code 19. After that then scroll to the fault history and hold the trip button down and the list should appear in right side screen in tachometer.
