There was recently a thread regarding this problem. Search the forum and you should find some valuable information.

Had the same issue after driving in heavy rain.. Had water in my connections on the back of my transmission... If u search the forum using keywords "trans program"i think there was a few obvious things to check like the transmission control module. ( take out and reseat) there is also a relay that sometimes goes an needs to be replaced that causes the issue.. Also does it do it all the time? Or where u experiencing any issues with your transmission before you recieved the code?

I threw that out there for like BMW_LVR said there are a few threads detailing it.

Unfortunately I never owned a BMW car with a auto trans. So I guessed it relating it to other cars I've owned plus others answers on other threads. Sorry.

I would start with a fluid check, both quantity and condition, and if there are any leaks. Unless I'm mistaken, fluid levels need to be checked at a certain temperature. The bentley manual should have the numbers, you can download the online version on google.

Nice to know that the E34 thrives still in Babylon.
