Worth Changing Micro Filters?

YOU BET IT IS!!!

Holding the old and new up in front of the window

I used the E38.Org link that was suggested to me. Its really easier than I thought it would be. I will add though, that I do have a Kwik Lift in my garage which made it easier on my back and easier to see under the dash. The air output from the vents is phenominal now.

Change is good

Replaced mine this past weekend and the difference is significant. Mine obviously had never been changed in 12 years.

Re: Worth Changing Micro Filters?

Are those the ones that go in the hood??? If not... what would it help on if changed to new ones?

No. These are up under the dash and can restrict air flow if dirty.

Ditto the Mayor, the interior "recirculation" filters are about the size of your hand...the microfilters under the hood are MUCH larger.

The microfilters under the hood are the 1st line of defense in removing dust/pollen etc BEFORE it enters your car's HVAC system. If you get the activated charcoal microfilters...it also (naturally) scrubs odorous particles from the air that is being sucked into your HVAC system.

The (interior) recirculation filters are the 2nd defense in removing dust particles/pollen/dander/etc from the interior of the cabin that may come off of your clothing, hair, or when the doors/windows are opened etc and are only found in the 7 series. They are also the most forgotten filters, and many only discover them when the HVAC system's air circulation is reduced to the point that they think something is wrong...to only discover that the recirc filters are so clogged up that it affected the air circulation of the entire system:

See examples below...you can see how filthy the recirculation filters can get when they go for years without being changed...at this point, air circulation can be greatly diminished:

My symptom was that I noticed the blower actually slow down airflow sometimes. I could hear the fan slow and feel decreased air blow from the vents. The rear a/c vent was almost non existant. Now it all blows very strong and I havent expeienced the fan slow down since changing the micro filters.

Interesting the fan would slow from this. This time of year brings these threads out in bunches on the forums. My fan usually quits after I have been driving for awhile and then turn the car off. Takes from 5 to 15 minutes for it to come back on once I am on the road again. Once the car has cooled off, no issues. Changed my filters a few years ago. Best check them again.

You inspired me to change mine on my 1995...don't think they had ever been done. The first owner had all service done by BMW dealer for the first 8 years. The condition would indicate the dealer never did them. They were 'uglier' than any you showed in this thread.
It does move the air much better and quieter...and smells better per my Wife.

Outside ones were quite easy...inside little more difficult, but very straightforward.
