Question on New X3 35i

What is the sound we hear when opening the doors of the car? Sounds like a compressor sound. Almost like letting air out of a bike tire for about 2 seconds. Does this almost every time.

Thx!

Yep mine too - my X5 used to make some similar noises, always thought it was the self leveling suspension, but don't think the X3 has that.

yeah I noticed that noise too in our 2014 X3 35i, it almost sounds like a little electronic engine starting up before you hop into the car.... i don't mind it as it's kinder cool. But it would be good to know what it is

I actually asked about it when I was at the parts counter at the dealer. After one of the techs came up and blankly looked at me (as if never hearing it before) he said it's some "emissions equipment". I had to tell him where it was coming from and when it occurs. I call BS since he didnt even know what I was talking about.

It is super easy to hear in my garage. Comes from the passenger rear area. Sounds very much like an air compressor. My guess would be the fuel pump but no reason for it to pressurize the line when a door is opened (I dont think!)

Question on New X3 35i

I've read others on this forum say it's the high pressure fuel pump.

Likewise...I heard it is the fuel pump prepping our chariots of Armageddon for yet another exciting adventure in motoring!

Probably the Nav system in the rear booting up. My M5 does it as well. It takes a few seconds to boot back up after being down so long. By booting up as soon as the door is opened you're ready to navigate as soon as you start the car.

Move toward the rear after opening the door and see if it's not coming from there.

No Nav. It does sound like a fuel pump. My bike does similar when I turn the key on before starting. Not the same exact hiss but that makes sense except maybe it shouldn't do it if I open only the passenger door.

It's a Moto Guzzi. Many refer to them as an Italian BMW due to the engine. It's 14 years old. 8,000 miles. It doesn't much use either.

It's the High Pressure Fuel Pump, HPFP.

I'm out of state this weekend and will test when home but, this happens because I have the fob in my pocket and if I didn't it wouldn't this?

Well, aaaactually it's not the high pressure pump. Based on the N55 technical literature, that is stuck on the side of the engine block. The device we're talking about here that we suspect makes the noise is just the standard in-tank fuel pump.

Yes, it is the in-tank pump (LPFP) that pre-charges the fuel lines when you unlock the doors. This is done so that the HPFP is not starved for fuel for a second or two when the vehicle is started. It is thought this was a possible cause of the high number of HPFP failures on the N54 engine, so BMW made the LPFP pre-charge the fuel system via software.

That makes sense, my E93 does it too, didn't originally but one of the software updates to help with starting issues changed it to prime the pump as soon as the car wakes up - sounds different on my E93, but betting that is what it is. Has to be the low pressure pump as it is in the tank, the high pressure one is bolted to the back of the engine.
