Steering wheel not adjust down

I just purchased a 2001 BMW 740i. Just recently the steering wheel stopped adjusting down, it adjusts up, out and back.... Any ideas on how to fix so the steering adjusts down?

What kind of condition is the plastic cover (around the base of the seat) where the buttons that control the power seat movements are located? Is it broken away from the seat in either the front or top center location?

Is it broken away in the front like in the pic below...or can it be easily pulled away from the seat?

I ask because the seat control module (for the driver's seat) also controls the movement of the steering wheel...and when the seat cover (the plastic part) breaks away...it makes the electrical harness to the seat control module vulnerable to breakage then slipping out of the control module. When this happens...its common for the steering wheel movement to cease as the harness slowly separates from the control module as the driver gets in & out of the vehicle which causes stress on the harness...which can eventually break and slip out.

Qsilver7,

Thanks for the reply.

The condition of the plastic cover (around the base of the seat) where the buttons that control the power seat movements are located is good? It is not broken away from the seat in either the front or top center location?

Here are pictures of what it looks like:

Does it make a difference if I hear the motor running when I am trying to adjust the steering wheel up and down? The telescope feature works fine, it just won't to up or down now.... Also took off the steering column fascia. I can see the back of the worm drive. As I face the steering it appears to be on the right hand side. Can't see the front of the worm drive where the washer may be located. Are there two worm drives one for Telescope and one for tilt? If it is just one, any ideas how to get to the front of the worm drive that I can see?

Dumb question on my part, would a fuse be blown if I hear the motor when I hit the lever to have the steering wheel tilt up or down?

Mine also would not adjust at first. But it was no adjustment at all. My seat and trim all looked great, but I reached under and pressured the connection. I then started to work and has since. If up and in out work, I would suggest a dirty switch for th steering column. Try blowing it out with the "canned air" you use on your computer. If that does not work you could try electronic spray cleaner. I don't use the electronic cleaner except as last resort as it can discolor trim.

Seems to me the module may be malfunctioning. Very common in E38's. These boys are correct check the connection at the module under the seat.
Notice on the above diagram that there are 2 servo motors for the column.

It's got to be one of these things:
The servo controlling the up/down function is malfunctioning
The wires going to the servo are broken
The signal at the module is bad

Obviously, if you can hear the motor spinning then it's the cable/gearing mechanism that stripped or broken

If you cannot hear the motor any longer spinning....

Start with disconnecting the module and re connecting.
Test the leads coming out of the module going to the servo and see if there is B+
If there is juice then the servo is bad.

A cable runs from the motor to the gearbox. If the cable breaks you will have this problem. There are two motors. One for up/down and one for in/out
